Iknow URL is over 800k,looks like alot of walleye dinners will be sold this year between the two lakes.

Honestly I think I am going to ignore the whole tribal netting thing this year. No matter what we do it will go on. Over the last few years I have watched it closely and it does nothing but frustrate me. In a few weeks everyone will rally together and say WE GOTTA DO SOMETHING and then a month passes and everyone forgets. I have a place on Mille Lacs and care a great deal about the lake so I do have something at stake here. For the next couple weeks i'm going crappie fishing and am not even going to think about it. I see the same comments, arguments, opinions and facts year after year on all the state fishing forums and it will be the same thing this year. Its one lake. Hell, maybe they shold just fish it out and then we don't have to worry about it. This is the land of 10,000 lakes!  ;D

Even writing this and thinking about it my blood is already boiling. I can't believe the disrespect that these people have to the walleye. Talk about kicking someone when they are down.....  :banghead:

yeah lets let them fish it out then we can restock it for them (red). It will go on and on and on. no matter what, anything for a easy paycheck. My dad has a neighbor that is from red lake and he tells me stories about when they were oung they would net for a day then drive down to the cities and wisconsin and sell a trunk or truckload of fish for thousands of dollars. Sooooo if anyone is about to defend them on here dont even try because it wont work i will not hesitate to throw the  :bs: and we all know what is actualy happening.

actually yeah... let them net out all the walleyes in mille lacs... think of the great crappie fishing we could have.  and it's only 2 hours from the cities, instead of driving 6 hours (url).
Make sure they get those damn 50" plus muskies outta there too.

Then all the white men will fish the crappies out, they'll stock the hell out of it with walleyes, and we'll end up with another Red Lake. I wonder homw much money the DNR spends on these two lakes alone. No wonder they introduced a walleye stamp. Maybe they should just call it the stock Red and Mille Lacs Fund Stamp  ;D

Actually I've followed this event since 1993,when Bud Grant had rallies @ the capital,we all no its a bad deal, just drive up the west shore now days, looks like a ghost town, mom 7 pop spots shut down.As far as URL goes, the restocking was a joint effort, the tribe funded the project, our DNR did the work, guess where all the fry came from?(30 million in 1999 and 35 million in 2001 for starters) the fishery on lake vermiilion.

Jd,

True, but they lost,we won lets move on...We should and need to live by all the same rules and regs, after all these folks are rackin in the $ these days from the casino's,why would ya pilage/harvest game fish these days with our 21st century technology during spawn? Oh yeah,I forgot, because they can...

Drummer the correct term would be "Native American". (Thank you Drummer for correcting your post)

year after year the same thing. well all we can do is ask the dnr to stop stalking these lakes and stop buying walleye, dont go to the casino and it will all go away. this is like the people complaining about the econemy and then they shop at wal-mart all the time. everyone has to do their part to stop what they dont like.

i would rather pay to have the res part of URL blocked off by a strip of land than to keep stocking a lake for someone to profit off of. we pay for natural resources not someone elses bank account!!!

Comes up every year, it's simple, find a new lake to fish if you don't like it.

I stand behind the Indians rights to net and gather. BUT! not with white man monofilament gill nets and million candle power spotlights and big lund boats. With generators in tents to heat and clean the catch with electric knives. If they wish to net They should be able to do all they want with traditional hand woven nets and candles on a stick with a clamshell as a reflector. Wadeing in the water with spears is fine with me too. The resource cannot take overharvest. Native people realize overharvest I think it is just a get back at whitey thing.

You Know what bothers me is that they clean their fish on the public landings and we are not aloud to be near there. Who the hell paid for the landing?

You took the words off my keyboard man. If you want to use a 200 year old treaty, then you should be out in hand carved boats with hand made nets. If you are using powered boats and mono nets, that's not right. I always thought Native Americans were all about the land and respect for it. Seems to me the tribes that net have gotten away from that by a lot on this issue.

I understand that for fathers (I can't use the word We since I wasn't around for all of this) took land, had slaves, etc. What I don't understand is the special entitlements after over 200 years. Isn't it about time to become one nation, one law for everyone. No matter what color you are?

Its to avoid conflict, when they 1st started this deal you could'nt even pull over within a mile of each landing, they had police from surrounding counties and also troopers directing traffic.Remember what happened in wisc? still amazed know one was shot back then or even now!

Besides, the tribe pulls out before our opener, all access's will be open on opening day.

I wouldn't be one to go to the access and cause trouble, I would be more interested in seeing what size fish are coming out of the lake and what kind of conditon the fish are in.As far as what the natives are doing I don't agree with 100 h.p. boats and spot lights but what can we do.I just feel if I want to stop by an access on public ground and see what's going on that should be my right as a tax payer not? Is there a time of year when the natives are not welcomed at a public access?

You might be able to mosey in by foot or bicycle, they just don't want alot of "looky lou's" pulling in,you know how people are when there is a traffic accident,"gawkers slow down".

Last year a reporter from the mille laces lake messenger walked thru the parking lot and video'd what was happening at the wealthwood access, lots of big fish, they had a circus tent setup for the cleaning station, quite the operation.

Don't get the wrong idea guys, its not our tribal members that are taking the bulk of the fish, its the tribes from wisc and illinois taking the bulk, infact apart from an argument with other tribes, words have been said, but they either just don't get it or don't care. The sad part is they don't contribute anything to the people in the area aside from buying some gas, then they buy that from the casino I'll bet.
