what part of the state you hunting in? intensive harvest lottery managed area? were you setting up on a feild edge? by a bedding area? gonna shoot the first thing you see or wait?

ill be in central minnesota for opening evening until monday evening. ill be out saturday morning in the metro. so ill be hunting 601,243,246 possibly this weekend. ill be on a major travel route in a box stand on opener. then ill be in a stand 50 yards inside the woods next to a bean feild. and the other area is a small patch of woods no one has hunted and a big buck has been spoted there so im sure ill try there also.

lets hear how everyones setting up and were.....

Where I was planning on going in zone 343 just fell through due to an illness to my buddys grandma, and not wanting to fight the crowds, I'll be setting up in a ground blind (complete with a couple orange flags) with my cousin who is a first time hunter. I don't think I'll be getting a tag for gun season (shotgun), and will help him concentrate on getting something his first year out.

I have set him up in a patch of woods next to a field and a couple well-used travel lanes so he should have about a twenty to 40 yard shot. There are two rub-lines within about two hundred yards from our location, so if the does are there, the bucks should be around also.

West of grand rapids,  Sat morning-Bottle neck, Sat night-downwind edge of a large bedding area.  All depends on the wind direction and if i'm seeing anything.  So many options, so little time.  All day sunday I will be in the middle of the thickest slashing where I have never seen an other hunter.  The rest of the week after all the other hunters will be at work I plan on doing a little bit of running and gunning during the midday and sitting where I see the most sign and fewest hunters in the morning and evenings.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

I will be on my property in area 221.  Being I just got a buck with the bow, I will be concentrating on helping the other hunters get on some deer.  I have a little pinch point I may go to on operner (if no one else wants to go there).

NE of Merrifield area 247, home of Mr. Walleye.  In a 16ft ladder stand on the edge of a long finger funnel area and scrape and rub line, lake to my backside for the water hole, bucks need water since there running and chasing, 20-acre grove of pines to my right, bedding area and a a head of me about 100-yards out a nice 5-acre patch of woods where all deer run out of the neighboring woods once thier shooting starts.  The deer either cut left for the bedding area or right in to my finger piece, both shootable from my stand and over looks a nice 30-acre open area to blast away as they sneak accross.

Good Luck everybody!!! :fudd:

I am still trying to figure it out how I can bring in a supposedly portable ladder stand to an area I have not hunted before, and haven't had time to scout out.  Might be step 1 of a several year learning experience.

I got one deer last year, first time, on a friend's property, but he sold the land.  Probably beginners luck.  But I did a good job field dressing it and butchering it if I do say so myself...

Anybody have room for two novice deer hunters?  I'll buy you a bottle of cold blue standing Estrous if you can accommodate us...

I will be just north of aitkin this year. Right on the river about 40 acres of tall grass and brush, 50 acres hay,10 acres trees. Surrounded by a bean field on one side hay on one grass on one and river on the other.

I'll be setup in 230 (Waseca county in south central MN) with my Dad and a couple friends over the weekend then possibly heading up to URL-Waskish area to join up with some more friends for the end of the week and second weekend.

Good luck everyone and be safe in the woods...lots of corn still in the fields around here today but the farmers are working to get it out as weather permits.  :happy1:

  • The brothers with my 2006 buck.
I'll be in 221 near Gilman - North of St. Cloud by about 20 miles. Sitting in a box stand on private land with the land owner Tom and my 2 brothers. I am at the corner of a 10 acer woods a pasture a gassy meadow and an alfalfa field. I can see everything and am at a good crossing. I will shoot the first mature deer I see - no fawns. The rest of the hunting party will shoot any and everything and that is fine by me. I have hunted with my brothers for 10 years now and have been blessed with 14 deer. Tom has gotten 5 My brother Mark has 6 and by brother John has.... ZERO! I hope he will get one this year -it's got to be getting old! If I were him I would shoot the first deer that batted an eye in my direction. Deadeye - what part of 221 are you in? I'm wicked excited for Saturday! I hope you all have good safe luck!

Here is where I plan to be on operner.  I took these photos last Saturday.  The stand is located inside a brushy point that extends 100 yards into a large swamp. The deer use this point to stage prior to crossing the swamp.  Also deer head to the point when crossing the swamp from other woods.
