I am really unhappy that tomorrow is my last day and I have no photo of a bagged tom. I do have several of out of range birds and deer that went by closer than any turkey. Typical though When deer season comes turkeys are close enough to touch. I will set up on jake hill in the morning It is not as impressive as bagging a tom but sometimes they come right up to my feet.

What, the season has started!  And I haven't even started getting ready.  I didn't put in for a license so I plan to buy a bow license that should be good for the last two season dates.  I dusted off the bow today and shot a few arrows.  I didn't shoot league this year so the last time I shot it was when I got the 10 point last fall.  The bloody arrow (now quite dry) was still in the quiver.  After a few shots I was able to put the broad heads in the 5 ring at 20 and 30 yards.  I don't think I saw this before but at 20 yards, my field points hit about 6 inches high and to the left of my broadheads.

2nd day of my season and scored a nice Tom this morning.  :fudd: I had 4 different Toms gobbling at me on the hillside and ravine above where I set up this morning.  I could hear them working in closer when my brothers cattle herd came over the dam I was set up on and started nervously approaching my decoy and touching it with their noses.  When they were done sniffing it it was at a 45 degrees angle.  Just as they were losing interest I heard a loud gobble just off to my right side.  A large tom was coming in from the other side of the creek from my blindside.  He was about 30 yards out when he 1st gobbled.  I turned my attention to slowly moving my gun his direction before he got behind the cattle when I started to hear drumming and spitting behind me.  The one I  was on was a nice bird so I didn't bother checking on the one behind me.  I took the bird as he started to circle to get in behind the cattle.  The toms still out of site kept gobbling while I retrieved the bird and walked away.  Amazing hunt and back to the house before 6am.  23 lbs. 9 inch beard. 7/8 inch spurs.

How long was the shot?  I see he was at 30 yards when you first saw him.

I ended up taking him at around 20 yards.  Single shot 20 gauge with 3 inch #5 loads.  My boy liked the pics so I ended up getting him a tag for next season right away.  Back to the woods on Sunday morning to call in his bird!

Any more turkeys harvested yet this spring to share? My season (G) opens this Friday and I am pumped up...I cannot wait to get out in the woods. How's everyone doing that is or has been out already this spring?

Right now, in my area, they are all henned up.
I seen 17 birds today...the toms are not being vocal. No interest in decoys.
We had 3 jakes come in as a group, the daughter took a shot, but did not connect.
This afternoon, with the rain, they stayed in the woods not moving much.

But, that's hunting! And tomorrow is another day.....

I started my season on Sunday and called in 4 birds. They were in full strut in the Mille Lacs area. The problem was they were a little shy about coming out of the woods. Rain today but I will get back out Wed...Hopefully to show up the newest addict in the family with a bird of my own.

I agree 100% I make sure that I start after fishing opener cause then there are less people messing with the turkeys. Yea the birds are smarter because they were called at for a month and a half but you still dont have the competition with other hunters like you would during the first couple of seasons

Well, Turkey hunting was successful...... for the turkeys, their is just as many out on the land as there were when I started.   -- I should add, I did make a dent in the tick, spider and gnat populations - but thats all I killed this weekend!
It was my first year out, so it was a definite learning experience, we saw alot of birds, alot of jakes, a few hens and a few Toms.  If I wasnt an idiot I probably could have had a nice Tom but I messed up my opportunity.
-- I decided after 2 hours in my blind, I was going to move up in the woods where I kept hearing the gobbles and where we saw some the day before (IDK what I was thinking).  I got my blind all closed, put up the windows and as I was reaching for the zipper to get out, I hear a loud gobble behind me and this nice Tom is sitting 20 yards away (behind some trees may I add - but never the less) on this hillside.  But as I turn around, it hears me and starts back towards the woods  :doah: .  I heard it again this morning, around the same area but it didnt come close enough so I could see it, I think it knew better now.

It was still a great time, we saw alot of turkeys, alot of deer and a Raccoon that I should have shot (It didnt dawn on my when I saw it, but then I realized it was probably stealing/eating the hens eggs  :banghead: )
Next year will be better, Ill know what Im doing and get better at calling!  Lets hope that longbeard is still around next year, hell I might even go out in the fall!

Thanks... It was on a tripod, gotta make sure that frame is steady. The video is awesome. I was watching two deer with the camera when this bad boy came walking in. Didnt even have to make any adjustments, everything was perfect. Just panned with him to the left as he walked into the decoys and then  :fudd: one dead turkey. He was huge, over 20 lbs and a double beard. One was just over 10 inches and the other was 9. Threw him on the smoker yesterday and fed 14 people last night with lots of left overs! What a great couple days!  :happy1:
