Anyone check out the new Jiffy propane auger?  (Ed Hill would be proud ;))  Heard last season about them, but I think its a great idea... they run on the small disposable canisters.  I run heaters/lanterns of them anyways... I think its a no-brainer really , Im sure they burn much cleaner, and seem like they'd be more dependable than a gasoline model.... dang... I sound like a freaking jiffy sales rep or something... :doah: ;D  Seen them at Fleetfarm.... anyone want to by a 15+ year old model 30 that still runs like a top? :whistling:

Anybody refill those 1lb tanks?  I saw an adapter that goes from your 20lb. tank to the 1lb. tank at Harbor freight tools?  The filler sold for about 20$.

I hear ya spearfoot... that auger has my name all over it!  Ive been looking for any kind of a good reason to sell my ole 30, but havent found a good enough one yet till now.  Hard when the old boy will not die and keeps going like the energizer bunny... I even have an electric for a back up plan but I like the 10" hole of the old gas model, old habits die hard.  Yeah, I too have tried refilling the 1lbs.... doesnt work too well.  I like going out knowing exactly what I have time wise for heat/light..... DDSBYDAY, one can always put a 20lb'er on a freighter pack with an adapter hose going to the auger.... think of all the hole you could drill off a 20lb'er! ;D

As soon as they put an attachment on it that will light my cigar in a stiff wind I will have one. ;D

Some one told me you should put your empty 1 lbers in a freezer be for you refill them.  Dont remember why  tho. May be to watch the frost line when refilling or something to do with the liquid ?

It will create a greater vacuum, thus allowing more LP transfer from your 20 lber.
Think about it, if you fill it with a half full 20 lber your only going to be able to fill the 1 lber half way because the pressure relation will equalize.

had an old timer tell me that if you pull out the little vent pin on the pounders they will fill up all the way. haven't done it so not sure if it will work or not

Did not know bout these. Are they comparible in price to a gas model? I wonder what the cons would be? The pros are obvious u already have propane with you now the car wont have to smell like gas from the auger. Probably less exhaust smoke when drilling inside fishhouses.

yeah, roughly the same price..... no "winterizing" the auger for the off season, well, besides unscrewing the propane canister.... no fouled plugs, or gas leaking in the back of the truck/trunk... no gas smell on the hands.... no bad gas issues from ethanol, water in the fuel lines etc. .....  :happy1:  it just seems really good on paper, wonder if they need a few product testers? ;D

Why no Summerizing?? I would think that the engine is still the same as a gas powered motor??
To be totally honest with you here, I think its gimmick... I see no real advantage to this other then like you said, "No gas spilling out in the car", that in its self is a plus but I really think they are just for show!! I'll stick with my 10 year old Jiffy that runs off of good old gas.

I've been doing this for years now, and like said before seems like no matter what you do you never quite get the pounders as full as from the factory.. Putting the pounders in the freezer(Or just leaving them outside for a while since most of the time its winter when your filling them) and bringing your 20 pounder inside will make it better and it does work, just not like ones you would buy in the store.
A couple of things I can say about filling your own 1 pounders. First, it's Not leagal to transport them in MN. Secound, you want to make sure that you DO NOT tamper with any of the safety plugs on the one pounders. They are there for a reason and for your own saftey, do not tamper with them.
Fill them by connecting them to your 20 pounder then flip the 20 pounder upside down. Turn on the valve of the 20 pounder Wide open. Let the pressure equalize. This will take about a minnute or a minnute and a half then turn off your 20 pounder. . Unscrew the one pounder fast then the addapter. but remember.... Its Illegal to transport this filled one pounder anywhere!!! So unless you want to buy a bunch of one pounders and think your getting a head I really don't think this is a good deal.
Where did I catch all these fish you ask??? right in the lip....

My question about this new little honey 4 stoke LP burner is, I wounder if it will run when it's 25-30 below when the LP liquefies. You know how you can't get the heater to burn sometimes when the LP is that cold. I wonder if the auger could have the same trouble. I suppose you could always keep the LP tank inside when ever possible to keep it warm.

I know, we shouldn't be out fishing when it's that cold. We should be back home watching football and checking the born on dating of our beer..LOL

I think that what the previous poster was saying is that there is no varnishing of the fuel and gumming up in the carb due to gas.  I still think that one would want to put some sort of oil in the top of the cylinder to prevent rusting during the off season. The other advantage of no spilling smelly gas seems like a good enough reason to go this route.

exactly.... but then, I havent had many issues with my old Jiffy 30 over 15-20 yrs.... just drain the gas/use seafoam/stabil.... replaced a needle in the carb/cleaned out the jet etc., once, when I got lazy one year and left the fuel in the auger over the summer... lazyness welcomes bad things :whistling:  Going with the propane model just means one less thing to do in the spring... ;)

:USA: :USA: Nice post I enjoyed reading through the threads,I too saw these at Fleet farm the other day actually black friday so a glance was all they got on that day.My old "stolen" jiffy was awesome hade 2 sets of blades and had an oldtimer sharpen them for a few bucks a time well worth it. the point was dull and hand fileing only works so well,as far as the one pounders go Ii know a guy who made a fitting for the 20 #er yes he too flipped it over he also took a tire stem tool for turning out the inside of the stem cut the end off and welded it to a screwdriver this stem on the prop can is an air release valve so it was loosed then when gas started to spay it was finger taughted and yes it did seem like they were a bit lower fuel but in extreme north country it only made sense to carry them.Yes they are illeagal to transport but hard to prossicute but alas the law is there to protect your life and that of your family{save some $$ risk your life and the life of others :sorry:} its an easy choice for me .NOPE. I'm also have polish blood in me so I'd find a way to get it hooked up to my 20 #er with an extension hose or something. Then get tangled and freeze to death like a popsicle lol.

Came very close..... liked them even more after the demo and asking them some questions..... still have to justify it when my old (15-20yrs) jiffy 30 works well... (started on the first pull after storage last week) I guess I need to upgrade other things before my auger. (new trap?)

The guides up at LOW where we stayed had one.  He said it worked great all year so far. A lot less fumes in the house was something else he said.
