I want to start looking for sheds and I'm just wondering when to start looking for them and what are some good ways to have the best luck on finding them. Do i look in thick heavy stuff or along a food source or just find a heavy trail and walk that. So if any of you guys have any pointers for me to try out that would be great.

thanks :newhere:

From what I know - you want to look in feeding and bedding areas since that is where the deer will spend a majority of their time.  Also, if you have a fence or creek - check there, since the deer will have to jump over them and that can cause the loose antlers to fall off.
When I have stumbled across them, its has been near our fenceline in a bedding area, so I have a place on our land with a few of the variables.
-- Rumor has it, some antlers are starting to fall, but the are tough to find with all the snow, I would wait until spring when it starts to melt.... but thats just me.
This will be my first year actually shed hunting, I have stumbled across a bunch deer hunting or walking the land, but never when I actually look for them.

GOOD LUCK!  I know there are a few other threads where we talk about shed hunting, I believe its 'Shed Hunting 2011', but I might be wrong on the name.  somewhere in the Big Game category

Shed hunting is a BLAST. But you need patients for sure. I typically start on public land and I start early in January usually and look often since I am laid off in the winters. I like to look between bedding and feeding like already stated but have also had luck on south facing hills. You can have the greatest spot in the county to look but if you move to fast your going to miss many. Keep on open mind while out looking chances are is your not going to see the whole shed but more likly just a tine barely sticking out of the snow. Do a search on the net there is a guy who has a dvd and a book you can learn alot from

Because in the winter the sun is in the southern hemisphere meaning the sun will shine more of the day on the south facing sloops meaning warmer for the deer

I would start taking walks mid-february and on....

You'll have enough snow then to know where to look. Find the beds. They will be grouped up that time of year and most likely be on the same few food sources. So.... from bed to food. Check those areas and then re-check them through-out the next couple months. Be prepared not to find many. I think if your lucky you'll find a shed for every 12-15 hours of walking. Its not easy but when you find a few its worth it!!  :happy1:

I was thinking of finding an area where a bunch of us could go and maybe do a group MNO shed hunt. That would be fun, just not sure where to do something like that yet.

INDEED!  That would be a fun time!   :deer:  depending on my work schedule (just dont have it on a weekday  ;))- I AM IN!

-- I would give up my backyard for a search, I just dont know where the bucks hang out.... I think the nice ones came in for the rut and now they are either gone somewhere else, hit by a car, or poached....   I will have to do some scouting to find out.
Only seen 3 nice bucks, but hey, thats 6 sheds!

I could get into that, I might have to cheat and bring my shed hunting dog... That's if no one would mind.

Tell us more about your dog.  I have started training Lucy to find sheds but would love to hear how you trained your dog.

Sounds fun. With a big group you could ante up and have a prize for most inches or plant some the day before if it werent for tracks in the snow.  Perhaps even have a planted one marked like finding the carnival medallion.

New Ulm is a great place. Oktoberfest, August Schell products. To heck with the snowy woods lets have a brewery tour.
