My daughter is in NC with her husband a Marine Pilot.  Mama wanted to see them for Xmas so that was her present.  Mine was to go fishing.  It was colder than icefishing..24F in a boat in the ocean is COLD.. but worth it.  We were fishing off Nagshead,NC in a 18 ft center console boat. We caught 30+ of this size stripers.

Nice job Corny  :happy1:.  Your timing couldn't have been better.  I am now starting to think the ice season will be a  total bust.  I'm sure the Dakotas are having the same problem.  Too much snow before the ice formed.  If I were you I would stay there.   This will be the 3rd year in a row that my lake  of no fish will be unfishable.   Lots more snow coming tonight too.   I am an 45 minutes from Walker so I bet Leech will be ruined too.   :banghead:

It is good you got into them like that. I have a buddy that moved down there for work and he took to striper fishing like like a fifteen year old boy to his first girlfriend.

Why would it be un-fishable?

Ice isn't safe.  It just froze over the Friday before Christmas.  Two feet of snow now on top.  The only way to fish where I want is to try to drive over the area with a snowmobile and grind the snow and slush up.  Big risk of getting the sled stuck or even sinking it. I have to cross over the last spot to freeze.  The area is over 100 ft deep.  You can't stop the sled to check the ice either.  Getting the sled stuck in slush is not a good thing when the temp is around 0.  It freezes in very quickly. Walking out in hip boots would be another option.  As soon as the hole is drilled you will be in ankle deep water.  It's just not worth it.    :banghead:

Corny I have always been fascinated by those things. So how do you catch them? How deep are they? What do they fight like. And what's the deal - they are in both fresh and salt water. What a blast.

Corny,  one more question.  Do you eat them?  I think you got a heck of a Christmas present.  Plus you got to share your wives present.  What a deal.    :happy1:

Ocean Stripers are great fare, we (5 adults)have been eating on one of them for the past day and half...grilled last night with Zesty Italian, today with Lemon-pepper like walleye, left overs fish tacos.  They are a flaky firm white meat fish like halibut.  If you ever get a chance to try this in NC or Virginia in late winter, you wont regret it.

Fawk.. :sorry: was replying on my cell phone in the airport..missed it..  Great fighters,we first caught them deep, tolling, you could see them on sonar around the. Schools of menhaden. Later we found a school on the surface chasingthe bait and casted jigd ripping them back. Prob could have caught with a topwater or fly then.  But the tolling was fun also, couple times had two on at once withtwo big jigs being trolled.   We were fishing in 60 ft water 2 miles from shore, you can't keep them past 3miles out.  Yep they do stock them in some southern lakes but don't think they get this big.
