Suspended Walleyes continue to provide most of the action out on the ice. It seems they are moving closer and closer to the bottom of the ice! Some of the Walleyes are cruising as shallow as 5-10 feet under the ice in 30-33+ feet of water. Right now you need to pay attention to your flasher as they can show up at just about any depth. If you are fishing both your lines down by the bottom, you are missing out! The Saugers have been a bit slower as of late, but as usual they are being caught just off the bottom. With everyone chasing those suspended Walleyes up off the bottom, most groups are catching as many or more Walleyes than Saugers. Glow red/pink and gold continue to be good lure colors. If you’re looking to change it up, chartreuse and glow green have been mentioned a few times as of late, and even purple.

We continue to push out deeper over the mud flats. Our day houses are spread out 6-10 miles off of Pine Island now in 31-33+ feet of water. Our sleepers made a big move this week, and are now out deep in 30+ feet of water and 5-6 miles north of Pine Island. One sleeper house had 7 keeper Walleyes overnight on Saturday. A night bite is rare on Lake of the Woods, especially in deep water. However, with the suspended Walleyes often closer to the surface of the ice than the bottom, they’re usually looking for a quick meal anytime they can find one.

It looks like we are settling into a typical January weather pattern. The 10 day forecast shows mostly day time highs in the single digits. Cold weather makes fishing in a warm fish house all the more enjoyable!
