DNR seeks comments on Crane Lake public water access proposal

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking comments until March 6 on a proposal to purchase and construct a new public water access on Crane Lake.

The six-acre property is located at 7516 Bayside Drive, Crane Lake, and is legally described as: Lots 1-5 and WLY 436 FT of OUTLOT 2, Harding Manor, Section 23, Township 67N, Range 17 West, Town of Portage, St. Louis County, Minn. The property is currently operated as the Water’s Edge RV Park.

The DNR recently entered into an option to purchase the property from the current owner. The site would provide additional public water access to Crane Lake and help mitigate parking and congestion problems at other boat ramps.

“The property has good road access, flat terrain, adequate water depths for boat launching and ample space for parking,” said Christa Miller, a DNR parks and trails supervisor.

The DNR proposal includes the development of a permanent, year around facility including boat launching ramps, boarding docks, restrooms and parking. Specific design details are influenced by site, use and neighborhood characteristics.

DNR managed public water accesses are purchased, developed and maintained with dedicated funding derived from watercraft registration and fuel taxes.
