 As we enter April we are still seeing some great action and nice sizes being pulled. Jigging with a minnow seems to be the best technique for walleye right now. Brightly colored jigs such as orange, chartreuse, and pink tend to have the best luck. Four mile bay at approx 14-18 feet of water and the lighthouse gap at approx 16-22 feet of water are some great locations to hit. 

  Sturgeon action is doing great as well! Four mile bay and the Rainy River are producing some nice sized bites. Night crawlers seem to be the snack of choice for these dinosaurs lately! Right now we are in the catch and release season. Keep one starts in just under three weeks!

  Remember, Northern Pike are open all year long on Lake of the Woods.  With the bays being open, those big pike are ready.  Bays off of the river, 4 Mile Bay, Bostic Creek and Zippel Bay are prime spots.

(Late Update) 4/9/12

Well folks, we’re experiencing typical spring weather here at Lake of the Woods. We’ve got temperatures ranging from 19-61 degrees this week and a variety of weather patterns. We’re still seeing good water clarity and the walleye bite is still on.

Graphs are showing more and more walleye moving into the river. Anchored in 13-16 feet of water jigging with a frozen shiner is showing excellent results. Many areas of the river including Wheeler’s Point, the river area in front of Adrians, Ballards, Sportsman’s, etc, have all had good luck as well as a couple lake spots like right outside Pine Island and in the Lighthouse Gap. We have only this week left before the season closes on April 15th so take advantage of the great river fishing while you can.

Sturgeon fishing remains great as well. Four mile bay and in front of the resorts continue to see nice quality and quantities being brought in. Night Crawlers remain the best bet for bait right now. Mark your calendars; the keep one season begins on April 24th!

Lake of the Woods

Reports of big sturgeon are rolling in.  Fish over 65" are being reported!  Lots of other fish in the high 50 and low 60 inch area have been released.  Deeper seems to be better.  Forty plus feet at the mouth of the Rainy has been producing some monsters.  A sinker and 18" lead with a hook loaded with crawlers is the ticket.
The sturgeon “keep” season begins on April 24th and runs through May 7th.  With the purchase of a $5 tag, anglers may keep one sturgeon between 45 and 50 inches.  Catch and release has been going on for some time now and has been excellent.  Sturgeon lurk in the deeper waters in along the river channel.

Northern fishing is open year round and fish are now entering back bays looking for food.

Remember May 12th is the walleye opener, and by all accounts, the walleyes and saugers will be cooperating.  Cabins and rooms are available.

Good reports are being shared about the Sturgeon fishing. Tom Heinrich, the large lake specialist in our area, shared with the St. Cloud Times that the sturgeon population has not gone unnoticed by anglers.  Things have slowed a little, but we’re hearing about many 60+ inchers and even a 70 caught in the past week. The keep season closes on May 7th so you have got exactly one week left to catch the trophy of a lifetime.

Early ice out this year has lead to early spawning which should put a lot of ‘eyes back in the lake for opener. We’ve had phenomenal walleye fishing all year and all signs point to the same for May 12. More facts learned from speaking with large lake specialist Tom Heinrich, 14-20 inch walleye are much more abundant than average. Walleye from 12-14 inch are less abundant. The 2011 year class is going to be much stronger than average, which means we’re going to see a lot of 6-7 inch walleye. They may seem like an annoyance now, but remember these are the fish of the future. This was noticed by many anglers this winter season. Sauger 12-15 inch are much more abundant than average as well. The Lake of the Woods Fishery is healthy and making anglers happy!

 Well today is the last day of an amazing keep one season for sturgeon. Catch and release will continue after today as will the mighty fine fishing we’ve experienced with these dinosaurs! We can look forward to some nice temps in the 70’s as we gear up for the MN walleye opener this Saturday! Get ready to give all the moms out there the perfect mother’s day gift, fresh walleye!  This year's opener on Lake of the Woods will be a good one.  The DNR reports the population of walleyes and saugers are very healthy with a good number of trophies mixed in. 

 As we anticipate the opening of the season please make sure you and your boat are ready to hit the water. Safety is an important aspect to the fishing sport. Floatation devices, noise making devices and fire extinguishers are important safety tools but things such as sunglasses, sunscreen and water should not be overlooked when packing up the boat!  A charged up cell phone or marine band radio can come in handy as well. 5/14/12

 The 2012 walleye opener was nothing short of amazing!  With a nice walleye chop, limits were caught within a few hours, trophies were pulled in, and the sun was shining! The south end of the lake did a great job producing some nice sized walleye in roughly 20-30 feet of water. As always, brightly colored jigs such as chartreuse, pink, orange, and the lucky gold, were on fire for the opener. For bait, we used a mix of live and frozen shiners and did well with either one. As the week moves along we can expect some nice weather with highs in the 70’s. The water temp is at the mid 50’s level and has great clarity.

 The report at the NW Angle is also positive. Fishing was excellent! Everyone seemed to catch their limit and they saw some nice slot size fish as well. A few groups even found themselves boating some nice smallmouth bass. All in all, a very successful opener on either end of the lake!

 Lake of the Woods is still experiencing some great fishing! Fishing in 26-30 feet of water in the Morris Point gap or in the Lighthouse gap using a gold or pink jig tipped with a minnow has been showing great success.  Walleyes also being taken on structure near Long Point and Rocky Point.  On the calmer days we’ve seen shoreline fishing pick up at Morris Point and pulling a spinner or crawler harness has had its luck, too! We continue to see a lot of trophies being pulled and believe this trend will continue.
 The NorthWest Angle has also had continued success. Jigging with gold, chartreuse, and pink jigs scattered in various depths ranging anywhere from 9-28 feet of water has proved to be triumphant.  Crawler harnesses working as well.  Shallower fish on windswept shorelines.  Areas relating to shoreline structure, underwater points, inside turns have been successful.

Welcome to another week of fishing the beautiful Lake of the Woods. Walleye and Sauger action remains strong.  Fishing in front of Long Point near Twin Islands in roughly 31 feet of water and near the Graceton Beach area in 29-32 anchored and jigging has seen some nice results, even some trophies pulled! In shallow water when wave action, plugs and spinners have been doing the trick. Some catching fish pulling cranks with downriggers and leadcore as well.

The NorthWest Angle is seeing some nice action up on the rocks on the big lake. Fishing has been good despite the changes in weather. We are also starting to see the may flies hatching which means fishing the mud flats has proven very successful.

Great fishing continues at Lake of the Woods.  Our summer patterns are in full swing and consistent.  Walleyes are being taken primarily two ways.  Trolling crankbaits in deeper water throughout the main lake basin and pulling crawler harnesses with a night crawler around reefs and structure.  Trollers are using downriggers, leadcore or a 3 way rig with their favorite crankbait.  Folks drifting or trolling spinners/crawlers are using a bottom bouncer or weight with hammered gold blades.  Limits of walleyes with trophy fish and saugers mixed in.

Up at the NW Angle.  In MN waters, the reefs around McDonell I., the flats W of Crowduck I., and structure in the Hay I., Four Blocks, and Little Oak I. In Ontario waters, walleye anglers are still finding walleyes on the reefs in most areas.  The Little Traverse area continues to produce numbers of above average size walleye and a good shot at a trophy.  Productive presentations are jigging or trolling spinners using minnows or crawlers.

Muskie anglers have been seeing a lot of fish and landing quite a few as well.  Many of the followers have been sluggish, and catch rates have been better during evening hours on the hot days, or during periods of cooler weather.  Topwaters and the Double Cowgirl-type bucktails have been working well.  Bass and pike angling has taken a back seat to muskie fishing on Lake of the Woods this week, but anglers pursuing them will do well casting to shorelines and points affected by current or wind, which will mix the warm surface layer with the cooler water below.

As a prelude to the big AIM Pro Walleye Tournament at Lake of the Woods August 16 - 18, there will be a Pro Walleye Seminar at Lake of the Woods High School auditorium.  Mike Gofron, Marianne Huskey, Scott Duncan and Chase Parsons will be the presenters.  This seminar will be Sat. Lake of The Woods Fishing Report

            Temperatures have been hot and the fishing is also HOT! This week drifting or trolling with spinners with a crawler or a leech continues to be good around the light house gap in Big Travers Bay and on the south side of Garden Island. The reefs around Knight Island have been good as well trolling crank baits weighted to the bottom in 25’ -30’.Downrigger fishing has also been good in the deep mud flats.

            In the Northwest Angle this week things have slowed down early last week with the cold front for Walleye, but now it is starting to pick up. Gold jigs with a minnow have been productive, but night crawlers seem to be working best. Each reef has the potential to put out over a dozen Walleyes in a short time frame. Anglers can expect to also catch jumbo Perch along with the Walleye on the reefs in 25-30 feet of water on a jig and minnow.

            There have been lots of reports on big fish being caught, so get out there and have some fun!

Fishing at Lake of the Woods has been excellent!  The water temps are cooling a bit into the high 60's and the fish are responding well.  Walleyes are basically being taken 3 ways, crankbaits, crawler harnesses and jigging with frozen shiners.  The jig bite is picking up.  Colors, gold, pink and chartreuse.  We are noticing some of the fish are starting to move shallower, but the most common depths are 28 - 32 feet.  Both deep mud and rock reefs are holding fish.  Everywhere from Lighthouse and Morris Point gaps to Zippel Bay and Long Point up to Garden Island fish are present. 

Up at the NW angle, walleyes are in transition mode and are being found all over.  Sunken islands, steep drops and wind blown shorelines are all producing.  The go to lure is a 1/8 ounce jig in white, gold or chartreuse tipped with a minnow.  Depths range from 25' - 45'.  The muskies are eating well.  Lots of fish being boated.  Crappie action is picking up as the water cools.  Jig and minnow on breaks.  Big northerns are being taken by anglers targeting other species.  Bass anglers having a "Hay Day".
