Trout fishing on Paul’s Creek begins April 14

Rainbow trout fishing will once again return to Paul’s Creek, near St. Peter, as the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) begins stocking operations for the April 14 stream trout opener.
“Stocking Paul’s Creek has become a tradition for area anglers and the DNR,” according to

TJ DeBates, DNR area fisheries supervisor. “We know a lot of people of all ages look forward to it.”

On the eve of Minnesota’s stream trout opener, the DNR will stock 1,500 rainbow trout yearlings into the St. Peter trout ponds, also known as Paul’s Creek. Additional stocking will take place as follows:

■Friday, April 20 – 1,500 rainbow trout yearlings.
■Friday, May 4 – 1,000 rainbow trout yearlings.
Satuday, April 14, marks the opening of stream trout season across Minnesota, except for eight counties in the southeastern Minnesota. Stream trout are defined as splake, brook, brown and rainbow trout. Anglers are limited to five fish of combined species, with only one trout that may be more than 16 inches long.

All anglers 16 years of age and over must possess a Minnesota angling license and trout stamp validation. Fishing hours for stream trout on inland waters are from one hour before sunrise until 11 p.m. each day. All stream trout must have head, tail, fins and skin intact when being transported.

“Stocking Paul’s Creek provides a unique fishing opportunity for area anglers,” DeBates said.  “The DNR looks forward to continuing this project for as long as we are able.”
