So next weekend is the big campapalooza, with being on leech soft water for the first time, what kinda presentation would one use, is it the tiem of year for a good jig bite? or drifting with crawler harneses or leech harnesses? or is running cranks a good option?

All good options, Jig and a shiner should still be great or a lindy with a BIG Redtail for a trophy...  Leech and Crawler bite should be turning on about now.  Crankbaits in the evening and Dark also great.  Salmo hornets and shad raps my favorite.  Its been warm up there this week which turns the bite to more leech/worm,  the big tournament is this weekend.. will have to see how they do.  The most important thing on Leech is to fish the WIND..dead calm TOUGH bite  Fish the shore the wind is blowing into , best fishing about the 3rd day of wind the same direction.

Note I did not tell my trophy ROCKBASS secrets.. :coffee:
I talked to my neighbor at the lake last night, he has been doing well on Jig/shinner or big fathead  hasnt tried cranking yet (which he loves to do in sucker bay) but said there are quite a few out cranking.  So must be getting some action.  He said days with the right amount of wind have been AWESOME for the walleye bite though!  Tough bite on calm days as usual.  Check the scoreboard of the tournament ... if Mark Christensen is up on the top  crawlers and worm bite is going on! He is a WOrmer!

As DDSBYDAY posted the leech lake tournament was a success lots of eyes caught.  I headed over for the weekend and tried some ROCKBASS..  I found some nice red tails in park rapids .  Fished about 3 hrs and caught several 23-25" and this one ..28 when stretched out.  Rock bass photos to follow.  Talked to the resort owner next door he said guests catching on crawlers and leeches also but best luck on big fatheads on jig bite.  Often a short bite.

Nice job Corny.  :happy1:  The Union Thugs are excited to rape and pillage Leech Lake for a couple of days.  I hope we get a consistent preferably west wind for a couple of days.

:happy1:   With your smaller boat and depending on the wind you will be able to explore more by using the trailer.   The agenda is set.  Now we must  to the weather.   :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:

You will not find a good detailed map online.  The basic will be the MN DNR lake map.  Lakemaster and navionics have the detail but are not free.

Cody do you have navionics on your smart phone?  Its not bad for Leech has 1ft intervals, not a lake master chip but a lot cheaper.

ya I have it on my iphone. worked great when I used it over the winter, but tried using it over memorial weekend and I think it was because my service was the greatest because it wouldn't even load the whole lake map, it would be just blue with no detail

I always make sure to download the map at my home where the service is good before getting to the lake for that reason.  Once it's downloaded all you need is gps to work on your phone.

I kind of sounded like you might do a little mustkie chasing. ;)   The 16 ft-er will be fine.  Especially in the Federal Dam area.  I will be chasing eyes and plan on hitting the Sugar point Bear Island area south of Federal Dam.  It won't be a bad boat ride for me unless it gets windy.  There is a nice access right at battle point that is in the heart of the area I will be fishing.   If the wind gets sporty it only a 5-10m drive to the other access.

My friend was up on leach last weekend and had 6 crappies that were all about 13 inches plus his limit of eyes.  I will get his local if he will give it up.

well me and my buddy will be fishing for walleyes as well, but im usually a pike/muskie chasing guy anyways. but I intend on taking 100% advantage of being on such a good walleye lake. besides the limit is 4 walleyes a piece, hit a good bite and that can be filled in less then a hour.  ;)
