Well since our last discussion about chainsaws I figured it was about time to purchase one myself.  After doing much research and reading tons of information and talking with professionals I realised I was wrong before when I said Stihl is the only brand to buy.  Come to find out its a ford vs Chevy thing between husqvarna and stihl.  Everyone with real knowledge said purchase which ever you have a local dealer who can service.  I ended up purchasing a stihl ms251 and am happy as that is the local dealer in town.  I expect this thing to last my lifetime.

I think it's more like quality vs price.

You cant go wrong with any of the big 3. There are many who get good service from off brands but it is always good to have the dealer local for servicing.

My company makes parts for most chainsaws. And I know the quality criteria for each brand. You would be surprised on who makes what.

yAH EH Kinda like batteries there are only a few makers and all batteries made come from one of them, just the required specs make them different. The high priced chainsaws have tighter tolerances and better materials in the bodies, blades and then costly advertisement.

In feb I purchased a poulan. It was cheap but the funds were limited. I cut down about 50 trees with it. Most were poplar,  I did cut up a few big basswod and pines as well. It has done well for me.  Starts every time.  Its not as fast as my brothers husky but he did pay 3X what I did.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

Poulan is made by Husqvarna, we make the pistons, jugs and clutch covers for that saw.

I have a Husqvarna because my brothers both had em and had good luck with em. I've had my 455 rancher for about 10 years and it's never failed me yet.

I purchased a stihl about 4 yoers ago whe my brother work for acme tool crib, the only complaint I have is the cheap plastic housing and the cheap plastic choke on/off mechanism that periodicly allows the choke to slip on top of the switch and therefore it cant be release with out every cuss wordpluse new ones on the planet. its a great saw, it the farm boss. just feel that there coulda been a better design in that mechanism. it happens to my dads to.

Have the farm boss also Boar agree with u.  Also watch out for the cheap plastic tops for the gas and lube. They break easy if you crank on them.

45.6 cc and 18 inch bar.  The dealer had to order it in and said I could back out as he needed to order one anyway.....so let me know if you think I should do something different.

That's a mid range saw, for cutting average sized trees and trimming limbs. The smaller CC machines 38-42 are for light work, the 50-60 CC are for the heavier cutters.

I know everyone has there opinions like the general said ford vs chevy mercury vs Johnson but that poulan has did us a good reliable job. we cut campfire would and don't need a saw to cut wood to heat the house so it does us fine.

Poulan is not a bad saw, Glenn
I'd buy one.

as long as we are talking chainsaws here, anyone know where or how one can find a chart for getting the angle of the dangle to sharpen chain saw blades?? I know poulan is like 30 degrees or 29.5 to be exact but i'd like to find some chart to use for down the road. I got a chain saw blade sharpner gadjet and actually succeeded in sharpening the chains!!!!!!

Save the package that your chain came in. This package contains all of the crucial sharpening information necessary, such as filing angle. The filing angle is the angle of the top plate, when looking down on the teeth, to the bar. This angle often is marked on newer chains with a small line that runs across the top of the tooth. This indentation is an angle guide for hand filing. If this mark isn't present on the teeth, start filing at a 30-degree angle and gradually increase up to 40 degrees if the chain doesn't meet your cutting needs.

Filing Depth
The hook of the tooth, under the top plate, has its own angle, or depth setting. This depth will mark off the length of a chip the chain bites out of the wood during each pass. This depth should be set according to your cutting needs. Larger, thicker and denser wood will need a deeper depth. Thinner, lighter and smaller wood will require a more shallow depth. Getting this depth correctly will take lots of sharpening practice. Use a depth gauge tool to help approximate the depth needed for the chain.
