Shotgun ammo, for you guyz that feel the inexpensive ammo is just fine for your type of shooting which is fine, just beware...I've seen this happen 1st hand but lost other pics from my old computer so here is a fresh one to make you think~

This happened to a guy who dug out some old ammo from years past before he went goose hunting, what happens over time when shooting steel shot in different everyday weather elements, rain, snow etc moisture leaks in through the loosely crimped seal on these low end brands and the results is a large rusted solid ball of steel,BB's and BBB's or T SHOT,the worst combined being shot thru a tight constriction like full choke, indivduals not taking note of the restrictions printed by the choke company or shotgun manufacturer.

This guy was damn lucky he wasn't hurt even tho he lost his new browning maxus.

That can happen with literally any ammo at any time. He absolutely was probably shooting a full choke with steel shot which is a no no or the end of the gun was plugged with debris

Back in Vietnam I watched them use an sks as a crutch and then pull up and shoot.  Those sks guns never missed a beat as the dirt flew out the end of the barrel.

However a browning maxis is the gun of guns.  To bad I already have a gold or I would be owning one of them.  I just can't wear the thing out.

Cody, not really, most often its the cheap stuff if not always that hasn't been stored properly,I have pics from years past tagged on my old puter but any low end brand steel load has a crappy crimp, sometimes you can see the pellets, but the the higher end loads are often coated with copper or nickel which won't rust, then they'll have a full shot cup and shot buffer which will leviate the shot pressure as it leaves the muzzle, also bismuth and tungsten loads will not rust and fuse. Also some higher end brands add a dobblet of wax to the crimp to seal out moisture.

Most often a solid mass of rusted steel thru a full choke will bulge or split the barrel, this pic is extreme!

The end of the barrel is still intact, so it had nothing to do with the choke or the steel shot. However, loads can get unstable with age. That or, it was a reloading issue due to over loading the shell with to much powder. (I've done that one myself  :doah: , live and learn)

When I was heavy into waterfowl hunting, I would put wax on the end of all my shells (no matter the price range, steel or other shot) just as an extra precaution. Mostly because a wet shell, if the water actually got to the powder, don't fire very well. That part is a good tip.

:happy1:  Overcharged shell or an obstruction.  I think the only way to get a squib load in a shotgun would be shooting a slug.  This would be very possible with old ammo.  The primer goes but the powder doesn't.  The slug is now lodged in the barrel and the next shot kablouiiiieeee.   Always check for an obstruction if your shot sounds like a dud.  This is way more common in handguns.

DDS,I agree, the forcing cone is also in tact, then "blam" 1/2 way up the barrel, again this most likey was the results of a solid steel ball/slug, I also agree from the results of the 2nd shot causing this much damage, other cases I've seen from just a single charge malfunction is barrel bulging in the same area, one was even spilt 1/2 way up the barrel but never have I seen this before, scary stuff and one lucky goose hunter.

They were probably 35 year olds with zero education who thought they were worth $15 an hour.  Probably the greater fella who's qualifications are breathing wanting $20 an hour plus benefits.  Good for Walmart  :happy1:
