For mono, I do every year, or at the very least strip off 20 yds or so of line. Ice can be sharp and put tiny nicks in that line, resulting in a *SNAP* just when you least need it. The cold takes a toll on it, too. Plus using 2-4 lb test just doesn't leave a "lot" of room for error. If you're really hitting the toothy critters, like waldos orw water wolves, I wouldn't even not think of changing it. Braids and fluoros are a differnt story, depending on where and how they weer fished, IMO. Plus, the cost factor is there on those.... :scratch:
