I've seen this happen many times when there is water on top of the ice and it gets very windy. Wind causes a wirlpool under or behind a dish house and eats a hole in the ice and house goes down. I told my wife that there would be houses falling through.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

I am betting there was probably not much more that 6" of ice there in the first place.  They have had lots of warm weather there....
