Ravens fans outraged over Kaepernick talk need some perspective

            What's Your Thoughts On This?

 :coffee: .....
The early days of Ravens training camp have delivered all manner of discouraging news and one large dose of controversy.

The back injury that has sidelined Joe Flacco led to the revelation that the team has been in contact with former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and continues to ponder bringing him into camp.

Kaepernick, of course, deeply offended a lot of Americans when he decided to sit or kneel when the national anthem was played before games last year. :angry2: He has since let it be known that he will stand for the anthem if he plays in the NFL this season.

Still, there is a delicious irony to the possibility that Kaepernick might resume his football career in the city that spawned "The Star-Spangled Banner." :USA: But even if he doesn't, the negative reaction to that possibility — particularly on social media — illustrates just how clueless some fans are when it comes to keeping everything in its proper perspective.

This has all come about in the three days leading up to Sunday's first public workout at M&T Bank Stadium, the timing of which presents a perfect opportunity to prove that point.

Lest anyone forget, it was at the first M&T Bank Stadium workout three years ago that fans cheered running back Ray Rice in the aftermath of his assault on his wife, Janay, in an Atlantic City casino elevator. That was before the release of the damning video that showed just how brutal the assault actually was, but Rice already had been suspended in the NFL's original halfhearted attempt to deal with a spate of domestic abuse accusations.

NFL fans have proven they'll put up with a lot from their favorite players. Ray Lewis is a god in this town 17 years after he was arrested in connection to a double-homicide in Atlanta. Adam "Pacman" Jones has been arrested at least nine times during his career, but is back in camp with the Cincinnati Bengals to begin his 12th season in the league. Former Dallas Cowboys star Greg Hardy was hailed as a "real leader" by owner Jerry Jones near the end of a checkered career that included arrests for domestic violence and drug possession.

And Kaepernick remained seated during the national anthem.

(Gasp!)

Let's be clear on something. I didn't agree with his decision to do that and I condemn his stupid decision to wear socks at a 49ers practice that portrayed police officers as pigs. But I do believe that the right to peacefully protest is one of the things that makes America truly great in spite of its many blemishes.

Both of my parents were World War II veterans, so the flag and the anthem mean a lot to me. But how many of us are really thinking about the real meaning of either one while we wait impatiently for some game to start?

I'll say this much in defense of Kaepernick: He put a lot more thought into his pregame protests against racial inequality and oppression than some Ravens fans put into the storm of angry tweets that followed John Harbaugh's confirmation Thursday that the team was in contact with him.

Kaepernick is not a "traitor." Standing up for a controversial cause is not unAmerican. The founding fathers risked the noose to create a system of government that protects the right of every citizen to protest and call for change.

Should the Ravens sign him if Flacco's back problem turns out to be more time-consuming than currently believed?

If the team determines that he's the best possible replacement ... absolutely.

Harbaugh was right on Friday to cast that potential decision predominantly in football terms.

"It has to do with our need," Harbaugh said. "Joe's day-to-day. Do we really have to make that move or not? That's the decision that really has to be made. I think there's a lot of layers to it, just from the football standpoint. I'll focus on the football part of it. If there are other layers to it, then I think that's taken into consideration at the appropriate level."

The Ravens have been much more careful about character issues in the wake of the Rice situation and a long string of arrests over the two years following their Super Bowl XLVII win, but that's not relevant in this case.

Kaepernick isn't guilty of anything other than offending a lot of people and not playing particularly well the past couple of seasons.

If he can help, the majority of Ravens fans will be happy to have him and the rest can threaten all they want to give up their season tickets, but they'll still come.

They paid a lot for those PSLs.

As far as I'm concerned he dug his own hole and fell into it. If anything good comes out of it I hope it's that others with similar ideas refrain from such actions. :bonk:

Should be another 9 years hopefully for me.  :happy1:

I had no problem with Colon protesting except that he did it on the clock. On your own time, knock yourself out. If one of my employees was protesting or making political statements while they were working, their employment would be terminated. I'm paying them to work, not protest or make political statements. Do I think he's a jerk? Better believe it. The NFL is aware it was a factor in their viewership being down last season. IMO, it's one more reason to do something on Sunday rather than sit on my ass and watch overpaid athletes behave like that. Go ahead, somebody sign him but don't act surprised if that behavior continues when people are turned off by it.

Some folks are complaining that Kapernick can’t get another chance.  What did he do compared to players on teams with domestic violence and substance abuse convictions?  They are missing the point.

I think there are many more people who are sick and tired of seeing overpaid, privileged entertainers and athletes get on sanctimonious soap boxes to push their political agendas.

He went against our very basic core values we've been taught since grade-school...honoring our flag as an American.

Reb, I agree with you.  But not doing drugs and not abusing women is also part of our core values taught since grade school.  The difference - I think - with Kapernick is two-fold.

First, I'm sick of celebrities thinking that just because they have fans that it gives them the bully pulpit to speak out on political matters.

Second is the Black Lives Matter movement that he stood up (I mean) sat down for.  No one denies there are cases of injustice when it comes to use of deadly force in policing, but each case must be considered based on the facts.  This group goes into protest-mode before those facts are brought to light.  They automatically assume the cop is always guilty.  Last time I checked, assumed innocence was the cornerstone of the American justice system.

And if this group is so concerned about police brutality, where were they after a police Minneapolis officer shot Justine Ruszczyk?  There was no Black Lives Matter-organized protest.  There were no freeways closed down.  Didn't Justine's life matter?

Being a cop is hard.  I wouldn't want their job.  Fatal mistakes are made and those responsible are not always brought to justice.  Something does need to be done about this, but this is not the political group that I would want to hitch my wagon to.  And Colin Kapernick is finding that out too.

Agree with ya all the way. Anyone representative of any organization should hold themselves to high-standards and public scrutiny. As a former LEO, I can tell ya all about THAT. IMO, a lot of (not all by far) today's athletes are just over-paid glamour stars that only want the me-me-me thing. We've created it. It's everywhere. Look at all the stoopid me-me-me "Housewives of Beverly Hills" type shows. Bling and drama llamas are the norm. Whine and cry for your cause, but when it happens to someone else, where's the support? Sh** makes me sick. In fact, unfortunately, I really have to use a Mark Twain quote, he fully believed in later life, to quote just how I feel: "I'm a member of the human race, and damned well ashamed to admit it".

There was a group of the "BLM" nutballs in town here, that the local paper kept giving lots of space, when the rallies were, etc. Got sick of hearing about it, so I sent them an E-mail, asking if there was a charge, and if there would be free samples.....they E-mailed back, asking what I was referring to? I sent another saying "The Bacon Lovers Meeting".  :rotflmao:  They replied back , that I was being inappropriate. Ya, right! Inappropriate THIS,  jerkwads!  :moon:

This town is so friggin' "politically correct"/MAYO run, the local radio station even bleeps words in songs!!!   :censored: Makes me wanna barf! My favorite radio station was off the air for a bit today, so I tuned into DORKchester rock station. Pink Floyd's "Money" was playing..."don't give me that do goody good *BLEEP* "......A bit later, Knopfler and Dire Strait's "Money for nothing" was playing, and "The little *BLEEP* with the earring and the makeup"......"The little *BLEEP* got his own jet airplane"  :doah: Incredible! I turned it off and poked in a CD. Reminds me of the censorship of the early 60's of music and lyrics. Who can forget Sullivan's request to Morrison to change "Girl, we couldn't get much higher" to "Girl, we couldn't get much better". Or  "Wake up, little Suzie", which was banned", or "Louie Louie" which was also banned. Same thing with the daily in -the -paper, on TV, on the radio "diversity" they literally cram it down yer throat daily, in some form. It's literally mentioned every single day in some way. Had a buddy and his wife from a big town in Idaho spend 3-4 days with me a few years back. They said they've never seen anything like it; couldn't believe how they force it upon people. It's become "the norm" to a lot of folks here. No different than forcing religion on people, IMO. Like music, let people interpret what they will without trying to do it for them. Let happen what will with some guidance offered.

The radio station up here in Warroad does the same thing with songs. Guess that is why we listen to XM. The politically correct bs comes from all the media idiots no matter where you are.
