Oh Delmar.... :whistling:

DNR: birdfeeders can lead to return visits by bears

Rochester, Minn. (NBC) -
A lot of homeowners set up feeders to enjoy visits from various winged visitors.

But those birdfeeders can attract unwanted guests, like bears,  and it may not stop be just a one-time occurrence.

While it might be neat to see a bear from the safety of your living room, according to the Department of Natural Resources it could come back.

Last week, a bear paid a visit to a homeowner's birdfeeder near viola and enjoyed some food, and caused some minor damage to the birdfeeder. One was also seen in rural Rochester.

According to the Department of Natural Resources, bears are not frequent visitors to the Southeast part of Minnesota.

"We've had a few reports in the Southeast part of the state of bears this Spring," said Rochester Area Wildlife Supervisor Mike Tenney It's not very common to have bears in this part of the state, but occasionally bears will wander through."

But here's why bears and birdfeeders might be a problem.

"Feeding bears is not a good idea because once they have developed a taste or a tradition of coming to a certain site for food thatt they like, they'll keep coming back," said Tenney.

So what should you do if you see a bear eating out of your birdfeeder?

"Enjoy it; typically bears when they see a person or hear a person coming they don't stick around very long. They usually leave," said Tenney.

According to the DNR, if you have a food source on your property, simply removing it may solve the problem.

"One thing that homeowners should also understand is that if there are bears around, keeping their garbage enclosed in a container is a good idea, instead of having it just laying out in a bag," said Tenney. "Feeding animals outside like cats and dogs is usually not a good idea."

Wildlife managers and conservation officers said that the majority of bear-related calls they receive involve bears destroying birdfeeders.

  • AKA "Outdoors Junkie"
Our garden has been growing pretty slow this summer. We are starting to get a few tomato's. The green beans just began flowering last week. The cucumbers, squash, pumpkins, and zucchini have had some recent growth spurt. The asparagus has been producing steady but I'm starting to let a few go to seed. Our green peppers haven't flowered yet. Here's a picture.
