Haven't you seen the movie? Same thing over and over.....that question has been asked a lot of times on here. It's a totally personal thing, you have to decide what you like, not a biggie.....

Jeff, the wife and i have a couple of handguns. I like having a semi auto with a double action hammer for a carry gun. My wife and i both have thunder 380 Bersas for carrying and plinking. They are nice compact guns and are around that $300 range. I also have a Springfield XD Mod.2 in 9MM, mine is the full length barrel. It is  sweet shooting gun. Not the most practical to carry, but can be done when wearing jackets in the cooler weather. My wife last fall bought the same XD in the subcompact version and that would make a nice carry gun and it is a fun gun to shoot. I do prefer the guns with a hammer for carrying. Just personal preference though, just feel safer with the hammer verses the striker fire. Hope that helps. Glenn can go play with his blue squirt gun now.

I carry a 1911, if you want something smaller....a P20 in 9mm is a good choice.

Glock has some issues, so be careful what you buy.

There are so many good pistol options out there.

If you think you are really going to carry, you might spend a bit of time and money trying to find a holster you are comfortable with; especially if you are looking for IWB.  If you are OK with OWB under a floppy shirt, that will open up your options for holster and pistol - as you can tolerate a little bigger gun.

As far as polymer pistols go, all the big companies have great options.  Find one that fits you hand best.

I'm not good enough to shoot well with pistols that have poor triggers.  I'd suggest dry firing all sorts of guns at the store - from lowest quality to highest - until you can feel the difference in the triggers.  That way when you find options that fit your hand, have the features you want, at your price point, you can also factor trigger pull into the decision.

For the range, I like a hefty, steel pistol, but I'm old school.  CZ 75 is a sleeper in this category.  If you'll carry from time to time, look at the CZ 75 Compact.  The other thing I like about the CZ is that you can get them with a manual safety.  I'm no quick draw artist, so i'm not worried about the extra .75 second delay I would incur in the hypothetical gunfight scenario.

No, it's not. Won't hurt a striker or hammer fired...but NOT a rimfire! Centerfire only.....

Myth 5: Dry-Firing A Gun Is Harmful
To be fair, this is sometimes true. Dry-firing most centerfire rifles and handguns is perfectly safe once you have made certain they are unloaded and pointed in a safe direction. However, excessively dry-firing a rimfire gun is a bad idea. The firing pin of a centerfire gun is designed to strike a primer located in the center of a cartridge's base. When no cartridge is present, the firing pin strikes nothing. With a rimfire, though, the firing pin is positioned to strike the soft brass rim of the cartridge. When no cartridge is present, the firing pin strikes the hard steel of the breechface. Repeated dry-firing of a rimfire can eventually peen the firing pin, dulling it and causing misfires. Dry-firing offers convenient, easy practice, but if you are going to dry-fire a rimfire gun, invest in some snap caps first. These dummy rounds will cushion the firing pin's fall.

I carry a S&W 40 cal.   I have a crossbreed holster that is great.  I’d say. 9mm is a great gun to carry and plink with.

I honestly don’t know why.  I think I had my mind made up on the gun I wanted but the store only had the 40 when I was ready to buy.
