The tech-guy was working on the site, and yes, I found some sheds. I'm not sure if the hooter was shot or died of natural causes.... I just found it, and didn't touch it.

You may want to call the Dnr and let em know . Had a snow owl one time hit the power lines behind my old place. They came and got it
If science fiction has taught me anything, it's that you can never have enough guns and ammo when the zombies come back to life... "WS"

Pretty rare to see that. I'd let the DNR know too, just so ya can find out what happened. They'd really like the chance at that too, I'd bet, since it's not a real commonplace thing. I better not tell ya that folklore says the appearance of a dead owl signifies an impending death or tragedy....

I found a Snowy owl behind our wood shed dead about 7-8 years ago. The DNR came and got it. I believe he said they were going to have it mounted and displayed at the Raptor center in Bemidji.

Looking for sheds sounds like fun but I never find any.  Like the training the dog to find them thing.  May have to try that.  I am afraid to get my dogs running deer though.

Seen a story dead/dying owls on the news a few weeks ago, mostly snowy owls came down from canada for lack of food, they showed one barred owl like you found dying from poisoning, seems the owl ate a dying rodent that was poisoned from someones bait station, was there houses or out buildings near where you found the owl?

Well that could be it 1/4mile or so not that far, poison takes time to pass thru the system, either way federally protected the dnr should be called unless some critter carried it off in which case if poisoned the critter will dye as well.

crap runs down hill.

Years back I was hunting in nebraska, buddy was with the usfw service/agent,we was working a case in AZ where a rancher used a toxic agent on a coyote kill calf, days later someone came across the kill site to find 5 dead bald eagles, the kill site was along a creek, walking down stream they found a number of dead critters including fish, rabbit and rodents.
