What the chow like at your deer camp?  Ours is somewhat traditional.  Friday night is always lasagna.  Breakfasts are catch as catch can.  We got away from the bacon and eggs routine just to  keep from stinking up our clothes and coming back to a sink full of dishes.  I do a  couple packs of instant oatmeal with some raisins in it. Sticks with me much better too.  Saturday morning before we head out, a big roast is thrown in the crock pot.  Dinner's ready when we get back.  No fuss, no muss.  We all pack our own sammiches and goodies for the all day sit. 'Thought about trying a couple MRE's with the heater for  a hot meal, but I'm just too darned cheap to pay for those.  So what's on the menu?

well......... something new this year. since everyone is there by midday friday my brother is going to fry fish......sconnie walleye to be exact.
day 1.........my brother takes care of the breakfast.........usually some kind of venny sausage. we fend for ourselves out in the wods. the kid and i do snacks and a couple sammiches, we stay on stand all day. i've shot a fair amount of bucks from 11 to 1. my brother's group goes back to the vehicles and cooks something over a campfire. that evening, as i do the main meals, its venny neck roast, corn stove top and hash browns. that is of course after HH and listening to all the  :bs: :rotflmao:.

day 2.......... more venny sausage something or another. same woods routine, main meal is my WORLD FAMOUS sketti.

day 3...... more venny sausage.......... hunt till  about 10......pack and head home!!!!!!!

I usually get to Camp Near and Deer early afternoon on Friday.  My wife makes a big roaster of venison stew that people eat as they arrive throughout the afternoon and evening.  We don't do any formal breakfast just rolls or such.  No one stays out all day as we gather at camp around 11 to discuss what we saw and hopefully show off a few deer.  It's usually country sausage on the grill for lunch.  Saturday supper has been pizza for the past years.  My son brings Papp Johns and it goes fast.  Same routine on Sunday except most leave so just a few of us around for supper.  How many of you stay out all day.  No one at our camp stays out all day.  We gather, eat, BS, hopefully hang a deer or two, take a nap, and plan where we will go for the evening hunt.  Do we miss some opportunities while hanging around camp, yes I'm sure we do but for us hanging around with the other hunters is worth missing a deer or two.

Good thread.  We meet on Friday.  Some come early like me and some come when they can.  But Friday night it's my polish over the fire with adult beverages.  Breakfast used to be eggs and my canadian bacon but now it's coffee and donuts.  Saturday night my son in law is making foil pack dinners with ground beef , potatoes, and other stuff that I don not  know yet.  Sunday it's Chili night that I'm making with added polish slices.  Monday we hunt til noon and then go home to come again on weekends till it's over.  No results then it's Muzzy season.  Looks like opener is going to be a cold one north of Duluth.  Low in the teens and then up to the whopping 20's for a high.  good luck.

Goodness...... we usally have chili of course, a couple of hotdishes, about three gallons of duck soup, shrimp jumbolaya, rumor has it "surf and turf" will make a comeback this year which is ribeyes and fresh walleyes, (after the youngsters head for home,) noon lunches are Ambassador weinies, ham sandwiches and any left over soup. Breakfast is oatmeal, cereal, and toast. We goot away from the fried eggs and bacon too. There's five of us that go up on Thursday morning and stay through Tuesday night. My brother, oldest son and I stay the full week.  :happy1:

We used to have one guy a few years ago who stayed out all day.  He gave up hunting a few years ago.  Rest of us meet at 11 am at our spot down the trail where we camp.  I have a old 1974 Jayko 16 foot camper.  Stove and furnace still works.  My nephew and his friends and two kids stay in a hollowed out storage trailer.    My nephew and his friend are both in construction and made that trailer nice.  Nice furnace and wide cots for sleeping.  Lot of our cooking  is done outside.  My nephew brings up a gas grill also.  When we gather for lunch and BS we make a fire also to warm up a bit.  I sometimes get off my stand if I get cold and do a slow walk through the woods.

I know that area well having hunted there since in high school in the 60's and to this time.  My brother loves to walk the woods.  He will stay in the stands just so long.  He walks slow and then stops to look around him.  He has shot deer this way.  Yes we could stay in homes in Duluth and drive back and forth to the stands but we love being up there the whole time.  Just not the same.  Not the comforts of home but it's only for a few days and I would not throw those memories away.  good luck.

Yep that's what it looks like at our camp but in smaller numbers.  Also  beer and cocktails after the meals around the fire and talking about the day.  good luck.

Thanks for everyone's replies.  Great to hear the different traditions. When I get back out east to our camp in Pennsylvania, we always have a huge fish fry.  My brother runs a big perch boat up on Erie, and always shows up with a huge batch of perch fillets.  It's kind of a big deal-all the neighbors are invited, and everyone brings a dish to pass.  We've fed as many as 35-40 people during this event.  It's great to see the hunters from the other area camps.  This is the only time we get together with all these guys, but we've forged some great, lasting frinedships out of this. My bro's got this fried perch thing down pat. No one ever goes away hungry, and there's never a piece of fish left when we're done.

wow thats awesome GG, i wish i had more traditions like that in family, but its a difficult family. being 10 mn from hunting is hard to comit to primitive accomodations when soft pleasures await at home.

We do all our cooking on a grill outside, or a  camp stove inside.  The fish fry is done on a propane cooker.  It's simple, primitive, and works for us.  We can also run soup on top of the wood burner.
