Really stinks that in a #1 city of 128,000 people with a lot of homeless and low income, we don't have a SA we can donate to. Just plain sucks IMO. The store was closed and turned into a MAYO employee parking lot. 

I do give what money I can to help them out, and for many years went there to help serve their Tgiving and Christmas dinners to folks. Also took all the food from Mom's cupboards and freezer and took it all down there for their daily lunch program.They do the most of anybody.

So far as I know they are still active in town.  I  don't know what the deal with the thrift stores is.   Last time I took some stuff to the one by Kmart they had so much stuff that they looked overwhelmed

Rochester Salvation Army to close store locations in late September

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) — The Salvation Army has announced it will be closing it’s Rochester location at 201 9th Street SE on Sept. 28.

The Salvation Army said it will no longer accept donations of used goods at its Thrift Store & Donation Center and will continue to sell existing merchandise and honor store vouchers until it closes.

In a news release Friday afternoon, the Salvation Army said the store’s sublease has been terminated in connection with the closure of the adjacent Kmart.

“The Salvation Army remains deeply committed to meeting the needs of our community to the best of its ability,” the group said in the news release.

The Salvation Army said that those needing emergency assistance are encouraged to contact Salvation Army Social Services at 507-288-3663.


It's now a MAYO parking lot.



Back to the plastic bags and where they go.................Wallyworld has plastic bag recycle bins right inside their front doors for anyone to use.

Yeah, they lost their lease when Kmart closed.   They also closed the one out by Costco.   What I meant was whether they were planning on reopening a thrift store in Rochester or not.   

They are still in town and accepting money, and probably some types of goods that they can use.   Channel 1 will be happy to get food  donations.  Goodwill will accept used goods like clothes etc.   


Salvation Army still has a considerable presence here in Rochester.    I'm puzzled as to what your issue is?

The biggest problem they all have is that people drop off so much junk and unsellable stuff that they spend all of their time and resources just getting rid of it all.  Most of it should be taken to the dump so the SA or GW don't have to pay for the disposal of it.  Heard an interesting show on the radio about this a few weeks ago.

With respect to Goodwill, one of the things they do is give people training and work experience so they can get other jobs.   So the money they pay the people as they get work experience counts as expense.   

Here in Rochester, they have a pretty nice store with a decent amount of staff to process and sell the donations.   Those people get paid at least minimum wage or a little better.   Meanwhile they are working trying to sell used clothes for a buck or two.

If you lookin for decent used clothes for a $1-$2 don't stop at the GW in GR. For what they want for anything I'd wear I can go to glenn's other favorite place to shop   , WW, & buy new. For that reason we rarely go there, they seem to do a good business though as there's always cars in the lot. Don't believe I've ever seen any disabled people working there either. SA has a big store up there too.

Luckily here in SSP, we have what is called "Nieghbor's".  The money made from the thrift store is used for the food donation part of it.  This is where the postal food drive goes too.  I gave up on both GW and SA long ago for various reasons.  GW mostly because of the guy at the top raking in too much.

We have a local thing here that takes donations and sells the stuff to train and help people too.  Can't remember what they call it.  I have some clothes that are just like new I wanted to get rid of but I heard they aren't taking clothes cuz they have too much.  Guess I will hang onto it for a few more years.  LOL

We have a small thrift store here too, it's called Treasure Chest. It's ran by a non- profit called Comprehensive Systems & they have some branches in some small towns around here. They have 3 or 4 buildings in our town just for taking care of mostly younger people with severe disabilities who require 24/7 care.

Goodwill is a Glorified Garage Sale.  They get free stuff from folks and resell it to other folks. They are not a Charity Org.   

There are so many that are a big Scam.  March-of-Dimes!  $.10 out of a $1.00.  They need $.90 for operating costs!

Yes, why else do we think Goodwill went about building brand new stores all over several years ago.  They were making too damn much money.  If he (the CEO) didn't find another way to spend it, he'd have to give it to the poor.
