I set 12 traps yesterday on what I think are 3 different colonies that are close to each other. They have kept the water open.  I will check traps tomorrow morning.  I would have loved to use snares but couldn't due to the thin or no ice.

While I was taking pictures I noticed a doe and fawn running across the swamp.  When the got to the middle the dos broke through and the fawn followed her in.  It took ths doe about a minute to get out.  I was sure the fawn had no chance but after 2 minutes of struggling the fawn got out as well.  They both made it to shore thankfully.

80 pounds is by far the biggest.  Previous was a 67# pregnant beaver caught in may.  The 80 was a week ago and it wasn't pregnant yet.

It's a 50 pounder next to the sled.

5 more beavers and an otter.  Biggest surprise was the 76 pound male beaver, which is huge!!!
I will be turning the otter in to the refuge tomorrow as I'm only allowed to trap the beavers.

The water level dropped 9 to 12 inches in the last week.  The beavers had  built a second dam and it raised the lake level.  It failed but the original dam held up.  The lower water level created air pockets under the ice and made walking on the ice dangerous.   I went through 2 times.  Lucky for me I was wearing chest waders and the water was only waist deep.  With all the bad ice conditions this year I have been limited to trapping just the bank dens.  Good part is I am only catching the big beavers, bad part is that I'm unable to gang set the lodge and catch all the beaver quickly.

I don't think I ever saw a double beaver cut like the one in your photo.  Big beaver started and little one finished?  Way cool.
