New welder

I think this qualifies to be in the toy thread even though it is a tool.  Same thing.  Well I have the OK from the CFO here in the house to get a wire feed welder.  I have an old Marquette tall round welder that works great.  I am an ok welder and get the job done on thick stuff but burn through thin stuff.  Years ago I had a Lincoln 225 that I bought new.  Went with the business I sold.  I don't need anything that good, but what is a good one for home shop.  I do have 220 of course but are the 110 wire feeds any good?

thin takes  a nack, i used to weld thin galvenized stud to 5/16 to side wood stoves. with wire feed. had to turn it down alot, feed rate and oxygen. fun when yu get good at it. id love a garage wirefeed. good luck

LPS, I have a small lincoln wirefeed. Think I run .030 wire. Runs on 220.

Not sure whether boar gets using oxygen for gas coverage as that oxidize . We ran Co2 and some other gas mixture.

I see HD in Bemidji has a Lincoln Weld Pak 180 HD for $679.  Uses either gas or flux core wire.  Can add an aluminum spool for another $200.  220v

That one is similar to the one I have for light jobs, it works great. I welded new floor boards in my 1973 Chebby PU on both the drivers side & passenger side.

But mine is really old (I've had it for 20 years now) and its 110

I've got a Miller for the real heavy farm stuff (welding buckets & frames)

It's 100 miles from here to Bemidji where the Home Depot is.  That pretty much kills a day.  Great to have it shipped here for free.  Actually I think it was $6.95 or something like that. Then I found a nice looking cart on Harbor Freight and that is $6.95 for shipping too.  May be a fee thing.  SO there is my Stimulate the Economy thing!  Feels great!  LOL

We use the GR store quite a bit too. Mostly ship to store as we're in GR just about every week anyway. We get a lot of our lawn & garden supplies there in the Spring as well.

Did find where they say Lowes & Walmart are "sister stores", whatever that means, however. https://www.answers.com/Q/Does_wal-mart_own_Home_Depot  We do like HD's Ryobi line of cordless tools too as we have a couple of sets of those that have been reliable plus they run the batteries on sale, ~ 1/2 price, a couple times a year.

I have the similar set up as Glenn. My is a Lincoln weldpak 155. Not sure what model replaced it. I have had it for 20+ years now. Does a pretty good job.

Cool Glenn.  Mine is the same style.  Been putting it all together this afternoon.  Was just getting ready to make some sparks and it has a different plug than my arc welder.    SO back to the hardware store to make an extension cord adaptor thing.  Then it was feed dog time and they were giving me the evil eye so that project went tits up for the rest of the day which is fine.

Gents, How thick of material can you weld on that Lincoln 130? I'm thinking I might get a Plain Jane 225 amp dc Lincoln. It's the welder I learned how to weld with. Thanks.

i made a few chisels with that welder.....1/4 and 3/8 inch flat stock to 1/8 inch wall pipe no problem. anything heavier.....just bevel it.

Mine is a Lincoln Weld Pak 180 HD.  It says that if you use the flux core wire instead of MIG that you can weld up to 1/2".

i have a weld/remodel project for this summer. years ago my dad made a sled to pull my brothers big fishhouse around.  since my brother moved to wisconsin he doesnt use it no more so i took it to the cabin. pretty simple sled, hitch ,ski's, and mounted 2 X4 's to lay things on. works super great when there is to much snow for my trailer.

its to wide so it really has drag to it. so i'm going to shorten the width so is runs within the tracks of the snowmobile ski's and 4 wheeler tires. the shortening looks relatively simple, but the hitch might need some serious reengineering!!!!!!

I remember with an oxy acetylene torch and a couple of clothes hanger you could weld anything.
