I bought the Ion because I knew the strike master is terrible at reopening holes in a permanent ice house. Otherwise my kid bought the strike master and he gets twice the battery life out of his. I bought a 2nd battery for mine, but only really need that in late winter if I am out hole hoping. If you won't be using to reopen holes I would go with the strike master.

Hmmm. curious JB,chipper blades or lazer or doesn't ion have a lazer type option??,I'm all about speed when on roaming fish, how is the torq on these augers, say 20"s of ice...demo'd the 4 stroke years ago,had to stop drilling after 10"s of ice to scoop the shavings of ice out,the auger  would bog down.

The Ion is a twin blade auger also, but has a guide around the bottom to keep it from bouncing around when reopening holes. The strike master is the twin blade Lazer blades. All augers start to big down when going thru thick ice. I always do the Norwegian pull out as I drill thru the thicker ice. :nerd:

I got a Milwaukee hammer drill on a clam plate with a 8" Lazer bit.

Very light, so I can run & gun

I agree pulling up as one drills thick ice, helps to knock down the shaving pile as you go,I'm use to pulling up as I drill thru thick ice with my lazer whilst cutting thick ice otherwise the lazer drills so fast it cork screws as she cuts, been times drilling 40"s + I couldn't see the bottom of the hole once I popped thru, dang auger with extension wobbled all the way thru the thick ice.
