My friend has a old gas fireplace in her house. Last year, I fixed her remote and it worked all winter long. This year, some of the buttons don't work on the remote. I searched for a universal or replacement with no luck.

So, is there a way to get this to work?
A place that re-furbishes remotes?
A new receiver that controls the gas valve with new remote?

I'm at a loss....

 Somebody like this: https://www.fireplaceremotecontrols.com/fireplace-remotes/specialty-remotes.htmtheirAdGroupId=1185273997301260&AdId=74079709727218&Campaign=%2 Maybe even call their Customer Service & see what they say. What about the original manufacturer, are they still in business?

So no manual controls?  Or that's just to hard for her to mess with?

The Make, Model #'s are a good place to start the Google-ing .

I couldn't find a model, brand or anything on it. Not even on the remote.

 Any #'s on the thermocoupler or the ignition part? I'd probably still try callin the CS & if nothin else try describing it to them. They may be able to tell you who made it doing that or may even be able to tell you where to look for some serial/model #'s to get you started.

Vanguard is a big manufacturer of fireplace inserts.  There is a parts site.  Google it.

Got any pictures?  There has to be a metal tag somewhere with the model either on an inside panel or on the back of the unit. You may find info for the remote on the inside of the case?

Yes, maybe if you took some pictures and brought them to a "Fireplace Store" they might recognize what you've got.

Here's some pictures of the remote.
I don't have any of the gas insert.

Looks exactly like mine.  I have a Vanguard fireplace insert.  Seems like when you take the front off there is a metal model/serial tag there.  I mean the front off of the fireplace itself.  They look like universal remotes though don't they? Maybe lots of brands use the same remote.

Just a thought—can you borrow a remote from somebody to try it?

Dang, that looks vintage just by the layout and graphics.  So it looks like the off switch is pretty much mashed.
Have you tried to use something like a tooth pick and lift the top contact plates off the bottom ones and at the same time push the On button.  If the off button is smashed down so bad the contacts can open or close. It's not functioning like a switch. It looks like that is the problem with the remote. There are replacement universal transmitter and remotes you can buy, but you may need a heating and air guy to hook them up.
