I've always loved the adventure almost more than the catching.  Over the years I have always wanted to find and fish a true wilderness lake.  In December I was listening to the Jason Mitchell radio show and he was interviewing Justin Wheezy and he was talking about finding and fishing these small gems.  I had to call and book a trip.  I was jacked up all month waiting.  The weather looked horrible but I have clothes suited for harsh weather.   Saturday morning came and it was -5 with a windchill of -20 and 2 to 4 inches of snow predicted. The holes kept filling with snow  but the fish were biting and helped keep the holes open.  Justin uses live scope so he could scan the deep hole we were fish and direct us to the holes that had fish under them.  Coolest part was where he pointed out a  big pike and we watched it eat a crappie that had been just put down a hole.   We easily  caught  200 plus crappies with the biggest being 15 inches, handful of sunnies and 3 pike.  My  buddy  caught a 37 incher on 5 pound test and I caught a 33 to 35 incher on 3 pound test.   It's really cool to be the only group on a lake.  I will be booking another trip next winter and fish a different lake.

Dakids, I know Justin and Alice. Met them through my union thug days while organizing the Terex plant in grand rapids.

Great couple. Occasionally on the way to the cabin I stop and visit a bit with them.  :happy1:

Nice dak....late ice panfish is my fav....old day's on mille lacs jumbo perch, ice pulling away from the shoreline on the east side, gettin sun burnt out on the lake stickin 12-14" jumbo's,good ole days.

I've herd rumors  we none natives can hire a native red lake guide who will take you to a romote lake on the rez for this very thing, giant crappies/gills,not sure what they charge?

What did wheezy charge ya dak?curious and to lazy to look them up.

very cool!

One thing I've been doing lately is fishing off-the-road lakes. Winter it's easier with snowmobile trails but I've found these lake offer way higher quality of fish...typically panfish and pike. I'm waiting to find a walleye lake that's off grid but no luck yet...

Best part, there are sooooo many of these lake up north!

Yes we did.  Weather was horrible.  20 mph wind.  Snowing.  By the end of the day we had over afoot.  Couldn't find the holes after an hour.

Justin took us to a backwoods lake that didn't have a public access.  We had to keep moving.  We caught our limits of crappies and sunnies.  Only kept sunnies between 8 and 9 inches.  I released a 10.5 incher.  Almost kept it to put on the wall.   Kept crappies from 10 to 12 inches.  We fished in 15 to 20 fow.  The crappies were super aggressive and fire up and met the baits halfway down.  The sunnies took a little finesseing.  Best bait for crappies were pink pinhead minoes tipped with a Maki plastic.  Sunnies liked a tungsten with a wax worm.

It was our second trip with him and we will be back next year.

You are just like boar and his wife.  She hooks them and hands boar the rod.  This is to easy.  I got to zing glenn and boar in the same thread.  Today is just getting better.

In Jerry's defense,  he's not a fair weather fishin guy...right Glenn? I'm guessing the only reason he's using a guide is to mark new spots and lakes. Nice!
