Pull, shovel clean snow off the roof of your house and garage ??

Watching the news the other night I kinda caught them talking to a guy that said he wasn't a fan of snow rakes. I have no idea what he did for a living that made him an expert.

What do you guys do?

I've been pulling off about a foot for drainage reasons,  just so it doesn't drip on the patio and walk area's.  Although it still did a little today. I noticed my plumbing vents were buried yesterday so reached a little further and cleared them. Lots of snow around here, hopefully we get a break.

My snow rake only extends to 17', I have been raking both the house and garage.
The house has more of a pitch than the garage, and was built later.
The garage was built in 1972, the house was built in 2001
The garage is / and has, old style rafters with a small pitch...so I needed to remove snow.
The house, not so much because of the pitch.

I'm thinking I'm may have to crawl up on the roof. With my split foyer even with my 4 sections of snow rake I can't get all that far up the house roof.

I got a new roof a few years back because the insurance adjuster said I had damage caused by the snow rack.

She said I did nothing wrong and didn’t say to stop using it…but apparently it can tear up your shingles.  🤷‍♂️

FYI…I still use it. Mostly on the garage as the extra weight messes with my garage doors.

A week ago Monday I had 24+" removed from mine.

I wrote a check. I have no interest in sliding off the roof. I'll likely have it done again in March I'm guessing.

My house was built in the 50's I would guess.  I was roof raking about 4 years ago when I tore the muscle in my butt.  It won't ever heal correctly so I get pain shots every few months.  I had my roof shingled the next year and told the guy about it.  He said that is too bad.  Your rafters are 16" apart.  You never have to rake this roof unless you just want to scrape the shingles and shorten their life.  Lot's of different scenarios.

I do my boathouse/sauna because it was built many, many years ago. Rough sawn 2 x 4 construction. If the snow gets deeper, I’ll do the woodshed and certain parts of the house that are subject to ice buildup. I use a roof razor and it works pretty well.

I do have 2 valleys on my house that the snow gets real deep and melts and lots of icicles.  I do rake that a couple of times if it gets too deep.

I am in the don't category. But we have steel roof on all of our buildings. The first really warm spell we get most the snow slides right off. Our previous place in Becker had singles but I only worried about cleaning off over the foyer because that was only a 2/12 pitch and would get ice dams.

If I ever build a new house it will have a steel roof too. And from roofers I know they all say in MN you need at least a 6/12 pitch to your roof not a 4/12.  Great advice.

Our garage is 4/12 pitch but the house is 6/12 and 8/12 pitch.

i had envisions of crawling on the roof because some parts i cant reach with the snow rake, i setup a ladder yesterday.......going up there aint no option.......its icy up there!!!!!!!!!

so i'll pull off what i can and call it good enough!!!!!

Me neither. But trusses have been engineered to carry snow load for many moons now when place 2 foot on center.

For me it's a ice build-up along the edge of the roof and all the vents being covered. Thats why I had mine shoveled. The weight I don't worry about, thats why I had insurance. If it collapses I get a metal roof.    The guy charges me $165 so I'm not climbing around up there, I just won't eat for a while.

Yes, I think I'm going to head up to shovel out the vents.  I don't think I'm going to push/pull the rest of the roof.

I didn't scrape mine down to the shingles. I only took off the top foot and left a couple inches.

kinda what I'm doing but I can't reach the full roof either. On the garage I used a ladder to get up higher but I DID NOT get on the roof.

Got the east side of the garage done good enough. If the bank gets another ft higher I might not see out my workbench window.

I have a roof razor as well. With all the extensions think it reaches 24'. Had it ~ 15 years and have used it 3 or 4 times. Works pretty good and with the nylon wheels on it, the damage to shingles is negligible. Most of the time the wheels never make contact with the shingles. It's kinda fun watching huge hunks of snow slide off the roof on the tarp. The most damage has come from the wind catching it and whacking/cracking the vinyl siding. As you point out fw, it's not the snow load so much as the potential ice dams down here where the snow typically has more moisture in it.

We do the backside, east, of the cabin as it drifts so bad that the vent is often just barely open, even with the copper T in it. What we can get off the garage, too. It's a 21' rake, I think.
