Talking some passing light rain or snow showers today. Should get back at pruning apple trees depending on how ambitious I feel. Could be a glenn nap in the way... :coffee:

I've been putting it off for as long as I can. I think this week I'll run all the gas out of the new snowblower.
Should I change the oil after running it?

Looks like we're getting better rainfall than was anticipated just 24 hrs. ago. There's a band of orange that showed up in the radar loop & appears to be for real judging by the pitter patter on the roof. If I hadn't had so much coffee I might be doing my glenn impression & looking for a place to nap out back in the warehouse!  :coffee:

Added up the precip for March at the ranch and in Bugtussle. At first glance not impressive but more to it than meets the eye. At the ranch we garnered 1.78" of liquid equivalent precip which included 3.1" of snow. In Bugtussle, we measured 2.33" of liquid equivalent precip & included 2.6" of snow. Normal for March at the SROC in Waseca is 2.25" and 9.0" respectively. We were fortunate that our soils were thawed sufficiently for this water to soak in for crop growth. The bad news is it hasn't done much hydrologically speaking so ponds, lakes & streams are all still very low. Careful what you wish for as they say. I still remember the DNR telling people back in 1988 that water levels would never recover from that drought. Within 5 - 7 years, people's lake homes were suddenly underwater! I remember looking at an island cabin for sale on Long Lost Lake south of Zerkel in that timeframe. Pretty spot & no one was there, but we could see water starting to seep in thru the sliding glass door. Nope.  :doah:

I remember that dry year well Dotch. I lived on the very north side of Stillwater and had a houseboat at the Marina a block or two away.  Minnetonka was drying up so boats couldn't launch at the accesses so they all came to the St. Croix.  It sucked.  I called it the year we felt like being in a warshing machine due to all of the boat traffic.  AND yes 2 years later the lake filled right back up.

I remember 1988 well to. I graduated high school that year and was working for a house framer down in Chanhassen. Boy was it hot. We lived in Rogers and farmed there. We got a whopping 40 bu to the acre corn that year. I went to work at Spancrete in Osseo by the end of that summer. The traffic drove me nuts coming home from Chanhassen.

Ya '88 was a year to remember. It'd get so hot by about 1 or 2 in the afternoon, we'd just quit looking at fields and go back home to sit in the AC. Crop was a disaster anyway. Boxelder bugs were awful, even worse than this past year.

Weather's still messing around here, chilly, drizzly & damp. It's got the ground soaked up pretty good. There's been some water standing on headlands in spots. Most are content to have the rain and wait. Some bought up early planting insurance so they could plant in March and receive $40/acre if they had to replant. Looks like that was a waste of money. This is what happens when you make decisions based on emotions and gut feelings.  :doah:

Today, tomorrow, & Sunday are the only days in the 10-day still in the 40's here. Almost 60 by next Monday/Tuesday & close to 70 by that weekend.

Another little dab of moisture overnite here, now breezy today with gusts up over 40 mph. Supposed to warm into the weekend with more rain Sunday into Monday. They've backed it down temp-wise tho. Had seen some 60's for highs in earlier forecasts by early next week but now it's 50's. Maybe 60's for that next weekend but with increased chances for rain.

  • "Conservative on some things...Liberal on others."
Fire conditions will be elevated in 32 Minnesota counties Saturday afternoon thanks to dry conditions and strong winds.

Because of that, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the following counties from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday:

Becker, Big Stone, Brown, Chippewa, Clay, Cottonwood, Douglas, Grant, Jackson, Kandiyohi, Kittson, Lac Qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Marshall, Martin, Murray, Nobles, Norman, Pipestone, Polk, Pope, Redwood, Renville, Rock, Stevens, Swift, Traverse, Wadena, Watonwan, Wilkin, and Yellow Medicine.
Conservative on some things.....Liberal on others.....Sane most of the time.

Got 'er here too. Winds gusting over 35 mph. You'd think with all those big fans they put up they could blow it back the other direction...

Still blowing hard & gusting to 35 mph. Scattered showers moving thru. When reading my moth traps this a.m. I got on the west side of the windbreak & it was downright calm. Barry could have his fire there! Expecting .25" - .5" of rain so he'd have to bring his umbrella 🌂

I love a rainy day as long as they aren't too many days in a row.  My Dad does too.  Well it is 52 here.  We just cut up a dead elm that was in the driveway ditch.  Hauled most of it to our campfire pit.  The wife may be weakening.  She asked if I was going to light it.  LOLOL   Maybe later.  The ground is really wet in the trees yet.   :sleazy:

Fed the bottle lamb about a half hour ago. Looked like ~.1" of rain so far. Haven't stuck the smaller central cylinder in the gauge yet. Chicken that it might freeze until later in the month.
