Yesterday afternoon I went out and set up a ground blind on public land. I had a couple groups of turkeys walk by. Then I spotted a doe and she had a spike hot on her tail. I watched him chase her around for 20 minutes then noticed that a fork joined in on the pursuit. After about ten minutes the fork started to slowly walk away and cross a field. I was wondering why he would leave a hot doe. Then I noticed a bigger buck walking up. He crossed over in front of me about 75 yards out and I dropped him in his tracks.

It was a fun afternoon in the woods with a lot of wildlife action!

Well done.  I didn't know there was a lot of public land to hunt in the Black Hills, but appareny enough.  Is there a lottery for residents to hunt the BHs?

There is actually quite a bit of public land you can hunt (Black Hills National Forest). Yes, there is a lottery for both resident and non-resident. Recently it takes three years to draw an "any deer" tag which allows you to harvest an antlered deer or antlerless. I moved to Spearfish in 2006 from MN. When I first moved here, I could buy an "any deer" tag over the counter.

I find it interesting that the SD Game, Fish, and Parks management strategy is the opposite of MN DNR. They limit the number of "any deer" (buck) tags here in SD. Where MN has a lottery for the antlerless permits.

That's an interesting point, Outdoors Junkie. Two states, two different set of rules and both trying to accomplish the same results. Go figure.

To me the limiting the # of doe taken makes far more sense if the desire is to increase the deer heard. One buck can and will service a lot of doe's. Shooting a buck only removes 1 deer from the total # the following year. Shoot a doe is most likely removing 2 or possibly even 3 deer from the total #'s the next year. Then again if the buck population is extremely low then maybe taking bucks could possibly make some sense

I'm guessing MN, SD, and WI have different problems to manage that vary across all states.

In the area I hunted in WI, they have too many deer and gave out two bonus antlerless tags with the any deer tag, plus two more bonus metro antlerless tags.  Hell, Glenn had a guy put a note on his windshield asking him to drive over and shoot some of his private-land deer.

I'm not sure, but perhaps northern WI deer herd is also suffering from wolf predation.
