i got all my seeds a while back when the home of the 11% rebate had a 15% off all you can fit in a flimsy bag!  but i noticed 1 of my carrots packs where missing!!

i'll get some maters from my brother and the rest from a greenhouse......

I was thinking I needed to get some seeds going this weekend.  I did get some bulbs started this week while sitting around.   A lot of these bulbs were supposed to be planted in the fall but they did not get here until after the ground froze.   So I refrigerated them.  If they go in the ground as plants I have less squirrel problems anyway.

      We just talked about this.
      For most pepper and tomato plants we're going to go with started plants from a greenhouse we've had good luck with. Yes. I ended a sentence with a preposition.
      We get our potatoes and onions and just about all our seeds from the same place. Our garlic has been in since October.

Off the wall question.  Anyone buy any of this supposed garden soil? I need to fill a somewhat hole after I cut down a tree

The last time I bought a couple bags of that stuff seemed more like a potting soil??

I may just steal dirt from the garden?

I buy the garden soil from Menards. But for some reason last year it had a lot of rocks and twigs in the "soil"

We normally get a few pails every year from the 1 in GR. But since we're so much sand, I usually use it for seeding a spot or 2 of grass. There's often some sticks & stuff in that too, but after I rake it out a couple times it's good to go.

i dont have a clue where it be at. we have this Mississippi topsoils just outta town i may try. its just the last time i bought some it seems more like potting soil???

Check with the city of Cold Spring and see if they have a compost pile.   Good compost is like potting soil.

:happy1:never thought of the city......but they might bring there stuss to Mississippi topsoils, not sure but i'll ask. i'm also not far from Thomens and have bought things there in the past!!!!

i tired it once with maters......with MEH results.

i dont have the room or patience to start plants from seed. my brother uses some sort of heat type light!!! and has good result!!!

Someone told you wrong. You would buy potting soil with weed killer to put around your plants?

 Starter soil is finer texture and has less nutrients. It also has more moisture retention substance. 

Potting soil is courser with less moisture retention and more nutrients in it.  Designed for moving plants to bigger pots.

Yupper, potting soil contains some soil (sand, silt, clay) but it also can contain stuff like peat moss, perlite or vermiculite & coconut coir. You are correct Scenic, the potting soil doesn't have the moisture holding capacity of regular soil mixes. The wife usually blends the two for the planters around the ranch. Unless it's specified otherwise on the bag, it shouldn't contain herbicides.

Not aware of what the various counties requirements are for their composting but it might be something to know before you go whole hog on it. If they allow grass clippings from lawns that have been treated, there could be some potential for various herbicides to come along for the ride. That was one of my concerns about the straw bale gardening craze a few years back. Some found out the hard way the straw they'd purchased was from small grain treated with clopyralid. It stays in the crop residue a long time. It's not unusual locally for guys to buy a jug of generic Curtail (2.4-D + clopyralid) or straight generic Stinger (clopyralid) to add to 2,4-D to spray their lawns with. Much cheaper than buying the lawn care stuff containing clopyralid if you have a lot of lawn to treat. Imagine it wouldn't be much different where more small grain is grown.

i dont start seeds so i dont generally care.....its HD's fault for me asking!!!!!

i used to go down to the city lot for grass clipping for around my maters and cukes but noticed they'd start looking sick........thats when the light bulb hit me!!! now i use the maple leaves from my own trees to put around it. and by fall there about all kaput!!!!

No you use starter soil for starting seeds.   Potting soil for repotting and putting plants in once they start to grow.

Was out meandering around the yard last nite & saw that 4 of the 6 clumps of daffodils were starting to poke thru. I took the rake & removed the leaves where the crocuses are planted. Ground was still frozen there. Will check the rhubarb tonite, mebbe with G&T in hand! 🍸

No radishes yet....But put in the onions. They are biannual and produce seeds the second year. So you can leave them in the ground and they will stand there in snow.

The earlier you plant them, the taller the tops, the bigger the bulbs.
