On our morning walk one of the other hunters was charged by a hog.  He couldn't get his safety off on his gun so he had to drop it and shoot the pig with his pistol.   It stopped and ran off.  I think the pig he shot is the 200 pounder that I shot in the afternoon.   It's the skull on the left.  Lower jaw is broken and missing a big chunk.

What pistol was he carrying and how close did the pig get before he blasted him?  That's a big hole thru a tough, thick critter.

But bully for your buddy.  I know its more common now, but most folks don't train for stress filled draw and shoot handgun scenarios.

This seems like a story worthy of the "This Happened to Me" cartoons in Outdoor Life.  (Those used to be my favorites when I was a kid.)

410 slug.   Single shot.  Looked like a derringer.  Guy was an idiot and very dangerous.  Afterwards he said he forgot that he put his safety on when the guys came and picked up the previous hog.  I asked what he ment by it.  He said that when hunting hogs you should never have your safety on.  He then held up his booger picker and said this is my safery.
After that my brother and I got as far away from him as we could.

I was really surprised when I read the following article in Outdoor Life and wondered why they decided to publish such a controversial perspective.

I get the point the author is making, but I don't agree with this chap.  If this guy is so smart, why does it have to be an OR.  Why can't it be an AND?

I concur Steve-O. That guy must not have hunted with an older single shot bolt-action Remington .22 or Winchester .410. "Hey, Mr. Squirrel! Wait until I get the bullet out of my pocket so I can chamber it in the .22 which automatically puts the safety on, or in the case of the .410, once I chamber the shell from my pocket, I have to cock the bolt mechanism by pulling the hammer back, so don't run off." Would've been like hunting with Barney Fife

When longer-distance shots may be required, the Public Defender can be loaded with either .410 slugs or .45 Colt ammo, very different single-projectile rounds. A .410 slug will weigh in at no more than 115 grains, while .45 Colt loads are available in 225- to 300-grain configurations. Either choice has the potential to give the Public Defender an effective range to 25 yards or more.

The clear appeal of this gun, however, is in its ability to use multiple-projectile buckshot loads like Federal's .410 Handgun round. Shotshells permit the shooter to put multiple serious hits on a potential threat very quickly.

Passing Judgement
I tested the Public Defender with a variety of ammunition. Initially, I focused on the Federal .410 Handgun 000 buckshot load, which registered on the chronograph at an average of 745 fps. This could be slightly low because the chronograph was measuring the velocity of four projectiles traveling together. Regardless, the velocity is comparable to standard-velocity .38 Spl. projectiles from a short barrel. That would appear to be a very respectable payload for a defensive round, particularly one fired from a 2-inch barrel.

Texas Deer Hunter Gets Tossed by a 300-Pound Wild Boar, Shoots It from 5 Feet Away

The hunter could smell and hear the pig coming, but he didn’t see it until he was lying face-up on the ground

“It wasn’t a normal pig grunt,” Bennett says. And when he swung the barrel around to see where the sound was coming from, the hog was already on him. Backpedaling, he felt the snout come up under his kneecap, and then the boar raised its head up, tossing Bennett in the air.

“I landed about five feet back and he was still coming at me,” Bennett explains. But the pig hesitated for half a second and Bennet, lying flat on his back, swung the rifle and took aim.

“I clicked the safety off and somehow still managed to hold the light against the rifle. The gun wasn’t shouldered, but I pointed it over my feet at him and pulled the trigger,” Bennett says. “He squealed and did a donut, and then ran 20 yards and died.”
