Interesting stat.  I know some people don't like Carrol and I think it is because he left the college coaching job after a year and went to the NFL.  I don't fault him a bit for improving his job situation.  I have always liked the way he seems to be positive and gets the job done.  I hope he improves the Raiders and I think he will.

Y'er not wrong about Pete Carroll.  I guess for a lot of folks, he is the sort of guy you love to hate - in a competitive sports fandom sort of way.  If he were our coach, we'd love 'em, but he ain't.  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that for a while he was a candidate to be the Vikings head coach, but he had his success in Seattle instead.

I don't know what to make of this.

Did the Vikes give up on him to early?  Was he a bad fit for the Vikes with too much baggage from his first seasons?  Is he a really "meh" player who latched on with the right team at the right time?  Or is he actually part of the Eagles success thus year?

Background...

The Eagles announced last Wednesday (1/22) that they have signed defensive back Lewis Cine off of the Buffalo Bills' practice squad.  Cine (6-2, 199 pounds) was a former first-round pick (No. 32 overall) of the Minnesota Vikings out of the University of Georgia in 2022. Cine made his NFL debut in Week 2 of his rookie season in Philadelphia. He played 10 games for the Vikings over his two years with the team before joining the Bills' practice squad this year.

As an Eagle, he assisted in 1 tackle against the Commanders last Sunday.  So it looks like the Eagles needed a "depth" guy and they signed Lewis.  It doesn't look like teams were lining up for his services.  Like all guys in the NFL...  I hope he makes the most of his opportunities when they come along.

Bill Belichick's 24 year-old girlfriend wears one of his Super Bowl rings at NFL Honors after he fills up his own hand

Despite being in the college ranks now, Belichick had to remind everyone who the GOAT is. So, he displayed his Super Bowl rings on his right hand.  And he gave one ring to his girlfriend to show off while attending with him.

Chiefs Fire Their Refs

NEW ORLEANS, LA — Following a demoralizing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, news broke early Monday morning that the Kansas City Chiefs had moved quickly to fire their referees.

While the team's officials had performed well enough all season to contribute to a number of victories, the referees' inability to come through in the clutch when the team needed them the most led the Chiefs to believe a change needed to be made.

"They just weren't getting the job done, so we're making a change," said General Manager Brett Veach. "There are a lot of different positions on this team, and they all have a responsibility to do their jobs to help the team win. When one or more of the people in those positions don't perform up to expectations, it's tough to win. That's why we had no choice but to cut ties with our officiating crew. They had a good run for us, and we're sorry that it just didn't work out in the end. We wish them the best, and we'll be looking to add some new referees as we regroup for next season."

Head referee Ron Torbert expressed disappointment but understood the nature of the business. "When you don't perform, you end up on the chopping block," he said. "This is a results-driven game. We showed up strong all season long and into the playoffs, but we didn't help our team win last night. That's on us."

At publishing time, Chiefs scouts were said to already have their eyes on referees they may be interested in adding through free agency and the draft to come back strong next fall.

Madden said, "If you got two quarterbacks, you got none."

That's the way the Steelers played it last year.  Fields was benched after a 4-2 record (beating playoff teams) when Russell Wilson came back healthy.  Wilson started off hot, but then cooled off, and Fields didn't return to the  starting job.  So now Justin Fields looks like he's headed to free agency.

If you were a GM for a team (not the Vikings), who would you rather sign to a 3 or 4 year deal?  Fields or Darnold?

Fields can't play and the jury is still out on Darnald. But, Darnald is the better quarterback so if the money is even it's a easy choice.

I don't know if Fields can play or not.  You can't blame him for what didn't happen in Chicago and he wasn't given enough time in Pittsburg to find out.

Its apples and oranges, but I remember the exact same conversations happening (not on this forum) about Jalen Hurts back in 2020 - as they were grappling with who should be the Eagles' QB going forward:  Carson Wentz, Nick Foles, or Jalen Hurts.  No one thought Hurts could play either.  Jalen ain't Johnny Unitas, but he is the four-year starting quarterback for the Superbowl Champion Philadelphia Eagles.

I think both guys - Darnold and Fields - have a lot of upside in a good organization committed to fielding a competent offensive line.

The last I read Wilson is all but gone but they might try to keep Fields. One thing I do know ............is that I'm not going to try to tell Mike Tomlin that he doesn't know how to coach football.  :doah:

I read a rumor where it said the Steelers made field an offer, but he hasn't accepted it yet.

It seems to be the "it" thing for sports media talking heads to harp on this off season...  What do the Steelers have to do to get a franchise QB when Tomlin is too good of a coach to allow the team to bottom out and get a good draft pick?

Should they mortgage their future to get a franchise QB now?  If they did, who would they go after?

Frankly, I don't think this is the off season for any team to be mortgaging their future to chase a franchise QB.

Its all coming together.  :happy1:

Good for Sam.  He got a step up from last year, and he'll only be 30 years old when that contract is done.  If he keeps improving, he'll either be able to extend with the Sea Hawks or cash in big in free agency.  If he doesn't pan out, $55-100M is a nice consolation prize, and unless he really craps the bed, there will still be a market for him as a backup or a bridge.

Fields...?     Apparently the league agrees with you, DB.  I would have thought he'd be able to get a better contract than that.  And then to have to go to the Jets to get it?  The Jets are one of those teams where it is safe to assume all their decisions are cursed until they prove us wrong.  (How long did it take Detroit to break out of that mold?  Teams like the Bears and Browns are sill in it.)  And you'd have to think the Steelers' offer was at least that good, but he must have had too much pride to take it and wanted out.  His choice.  We'll see.

Rodgers?  The Steelers need a QB!  Erin would be a win-win for them.  If he wins, they win.  If Rodgers stinks up the joint, the front office can save face by saying we tried to get the best QB out there, they bottom out, and then they get a high draft choice to go after their next QB.  Just make sure they sign Rodgers to an escape-friendly deal.

If that happens I’m taking the year off of watching the stillers. I’d rather tank the Season and draft high next year.
