Appreciate your report Scenic. There have even been some crazies with a death wish dicking around on the ice down here.

Ground was thawed day before yesterday when I hauled the last load of manure. On the north facing slope & north of the house, there is apparently still some frost. Tractor & skidsteer were both sliding on the mud on top of the frost when pulling into the yard or loading.

I was thinking what it would be like if it was 20 degrees instead of 48...

Yes big difference.  It is 42 here and foggy misty out.  I can't see the houses across the river now.

Just made the loop whilst delivering Christmas cheer. Beaver Lake is open except could see a half-melted ice shelf along the south shore. Likewise with St. Olaf Lake on the west end & south side. The way the wind is howling, it won't need much if any rain to melt the remaining ice. And the wife thinks I get nothing done... :coffee:

I wouldn't really want to go out and get it neither.  Then a wheeler and person may be in the drink too.

Can't remember if it was 2006 or just when but there were a bunch of them here that went down shortly after New Year's. Nothing good about that.

Did a river check in my area which is east of Baudette.  Everyone is pulling permanent or skid houses.  There were about 3 still out there and their wheeler was on shore which is real close.  I think they were getting ready to pull it too.  It is much narrower here then down by the lake so there is a little more current here so it may take longer to freeze here and the ice down by the lake is probably much thicker. I did see more people walking out with portables.  I am glad to see that upriver in this area.  You don't want to go down in a river.  Almost no current is still current.  In any water but especially a river if you go down immediately look for the hole and grab the edge of the ice.  That is your only chance of survival.  It will be the best decision you ever made.  I hope noone has to experience but it will happen to some.

I heard a few days ago that long lake by hawick, where we used to have the camper has open water

But that one took longer to freeze over too.

Personally I'd like to see the lakes around here open up completely and freeze over again with nice clear ice. It won't take much to make ice now. This foggy ice we have now won't let any sunlight thru and we'll winter kill due to lack of O2. Just a thought. :happy1:
