Might as well do some plantin on a cold crappy day. Serrano,  bell, cayenne,  thai,  jalapeno and 2 beefsteak.  Last year I bought 4 pepper plants from a fund raiser, which came from gertens,  they were 2 plants in one container so that's how I'll do these.. :happy1:

I gots a question.  So lots of my plants go in pots n buckets, they usually do real well except last year the maters got all fungust up. Do you bucket growers start with fresh buckets every year or scrub em up? I've been using the same ones for quite a while,  seems the peppers could care less cuz they've been fine..
Title: Re: 2019 gardens
Post by: Rebel SS on March 03/04/19, 04:23:06 PM
I always scrubbed mine out with bleach and water, let dry in the sun. I also have about 7 or 8 1/8" holes drilled in a circle in  the bottom, with a round piece of screen inside, and about 1'' sand on top of that for drainage.

I'm still thinking of indoor lettuce.  Here is the site that makes it look easy.  I will buy a Romaine today and if I don't die from eating it I will propagate more baby Romaines from the first one.  Put them in pots and sit them in the window and see what happenhttps://morningchores.com/growing-lettuce-indoors/s.

Rhubarb is getting closer. The green stemmed rhubarb is actually starting to bolt! I like the red stemmed stuff better anyway. I dunno if it's optimum boar but I like to see the stems get at least 9"-12" long. It's been slower than normal and definitely slower than last year. By this time last year it had been in the 70's and 80's so the rhubarb really took off. I think it might've been glenn mentioned it can be harvested until early July. After that he and his little woodland friends can hide under those big leaves!  :rotflmao:

I got green house covers for my gardens....I'll have to go throw them on soon.

Thought I seen a couple snow flake just now.....

the weather this morning made it sound like a small chance of snow from Duluth SW towards just west of the cities area...
My niece saw snow this morning near Finlayson.  We might have to cover the plants tonight.  Warning of frost.

I have a question on fruit trees.  Plum and apple.  Two plum bushes and one apple tree.  The last two years I haven't gotten any fruit at all.  I have some friends who do not spray their trees and have good results.  I think with me it's some kind of insects that are causing this.  Blooms are out and what kind a spray should I use to help me get fruit.  Thanks  good luck.

I use a fruit tree spray made by Bonide.  It contains Captan, Malathion and Carbaryl.  I usually spray after the blooms have fallen and fruit is evident.  Generally end of May and again two weeks later.  This is both a bugs and mildew.  As I do with most plants, if I feel I need 10 plants (Trees, bushes, tomatoes, etc) I will plant 20 and hope to make up any shortfalls with volume.   :rotflmao:

I don't spray my apple trees either and for the two of us with four bearing trees, we have more apples than we can eat or give away. Not that I don't want to spray them, it's just not in the cards with everything else going on. Maybe when I retire. We are fortunate in that we are relatively isolated without a lot of people with apple trees nearby. Have noticed some scab become more prevalent as the growing season have been wetter and we've planted more crabapples for the wildlife. Have more bird problems than insect problems on the eating apples.

Although I usually spray, I see nothing wrong with not spraying.  I would get plenty apples either way.  The main reason I spray (in my yard not at my land) is to help prevent the black spot fungus that causes the crab apple trees to lose their leaves in August.  Mostly cosmetic but they do look bad when all the leaves fall and it's still summer.  I Have planted around 40 regular apple trees and 20 crab apple trees at my land.  I'm going for numbers here and couldn't afford the time or cost to spray them all.  I plan to plant an additional 12 trees this Wednesday and then maybe be done for a while.  :bonk:

The Indian Magic crabapple tree in our yard gets that black spot and it's likely scab. The worst part is the variety is supposed to be relatively resistant. However, like most of our 15 - 20 crabapple trees, I don't prune them as aggressively as I probably should and that tree is getting good sized. I did prune the snot out of it this spring to improve air flow so we'll see if that helps. The problem is worse some years than others and recent wet springs and summers haven't helped. Sounds like you've got matters well under control deadeye but for people like me who don't, here are a couple links for disease and insect control:

deadeye, where did you get your tree tubes and do you leave it on year round? Bunnies nailed three of my crabs pretty good last winter but they must've only eaten the outer bark. The trees leafed out and flowered like normal. Next year I might not be so lucky.
Title: Re: 2019 gardens
Post by: deadeye on May 05/21/19, 04:14:32 PM
Dotch,
I hope you were lucky. Frequently, if they were griddled they have enough stored energy to leaf out and bloom but will die off later.  The tubes can be purchased at fleet farm, runnings, home depot and the like.  They are not cheep.  I am trying something new this year.  I'm planning on using the sewer drain tubing.  It has small slits for ventilation and can be cut to the length you need from a 10 foot piece.  Only issue is the tubing is black but I think it will have enough ventilation.  Yes, I leave the tubes on all year round.  Haven't had one chewed up yet.

A lot of people use drainage tile here. Finding someone who has some laying around is the trick. It needs to be slit as well which shouldn't be too tough using any number of means. I just like the looks of the stuff you had deadeye.

Fingers crossed on the crabapples that were bunny damaged. The snow swirled around them this past winter making a perfect hole for bunnies to sit and gnaw in. It looked like someone had put mulch around the trees this spring. They are Siberian crabs. They're tough. I've chopped them off with the rear mount tractor mower, the bunnies have pruned them off, and I've brutalized them when pruning because with their spines, they really suck to mow around. They just seem to keep coming. It'll be interesting to see what they do after this latest episode. Maybe tomorrow a.m. when I'm reading the cutworm trap I'll photo the damage.

Another question, are your cages made from welded wire? I'd love to put some trees in the sheep pasture like that, maybe some autumn blaze maples, more crabapples or even regular apples.

the rubarb. I just cut the whole stock that's formed the seeds.  Not much you can do with skinny asparagus but harvest and eat what it gives you.

+1 on cutting out the rhubarb stalk with the flowers/seed head.

It's been a goofy year as short on heat as we are. Guessing like a lot of things some kinds of rhubarb are more photoperiodic than others. We have two types, a green and a red type, Canada red I think. The green variety bolted already several weeks ago. It usually does here. It's become more spindly and seems more interested in producing seed rather than nice stems for eating. The red type has always been slower to bolt although looking at photos, it's about 2/3- 3/4 the size it was the past couple years. Was reading that rhubarb is a heavy user of sulfur. Typically we see warmer weather which allows more sulfur to be mineralized from the organic matter. I need to plant my canna bulbs yet and I put manure in the trench when I do that. Since most manure is a good source of sulfur, it probably wouldn't hurt if I worked some in around the rhubarb as well, either this spring or in the fall after it's gone dormant.

Decided to sort thru the canna bulbs before going to a graduation. Packed in boxes of shredded newspaper and stuffed under the crawlspace they kept pretty well. Looks like I have somewhere in the vicinity of 30 - 40 bulbs. I'll probably plant only about 20 of them if I don't find a new spot for the rest. They're work to plant, dig and store but the hummingbirds love them. If someone wants some PM me and we'll see what can be arranged.

If you weren't so darned lazy you could've had some cannas on the cheap!  :rotflmao: Incidentally I planted all but about a dozen of those bulbs today. Dumped numerous buckets of sheep poop & worked it in where I planted them. Also planted the four o'clocks ahead of the forecast rain. The things I won't do for a hummer!  :rotflmao:

Mrs. Cheviot worked retail greenhouse for prolly 25 years. Seems like after the first week in June she used to start clearing stuff out. Depended on the year. A later spring sometimes it would be delayed another week. The last place she worked was a satellite greenhouse in Albert's Leaf for Souba's whose main store is in Owatonna. They'd cut stuff down in price by half and then half again the next week, practically giving it away. After that it went in the dumpster. People started dumpster diving so they'd snip the annuals in two so they were worthless. People actually had the audacity to bitch about it.

Dotch,
I don't count bulbs, I count boxes of them.  I usually end up with 3-4 large boxes and a few bags of canna bulbs.  I have two types, red and green.  I usually dig about half to them in fall and then in spring plant about two thirds of them.  The rest are given away or pitched.

That's pretty impressive deadeye. When I started planting them again promised myself that I'd only plant the one row. I remembered how much work they were as a kid. Now I've broken my own rule and I'm not even retired yet! Do your deer eat the excess bulbs? A couple years ago it froze a bunch of the bulbs in the ground before I could get at them. Had read they could be used as livestock feed. Tossed them over the fence to the sheep but not interested.

Lookin' good deadeye!  :happy1: I operate along the same lines. After it annoys me enough I get after it and clean it up. Getting about to that point here right now. Nothing like it used to be so not as time consuming. I actually need to transplant some of the weeds into some pots for a display I got talked into.

when and if i'm at home I usually spend an hour or so a night going thru the garden weeding. thats provided I don't have anything else I feel is more pressing.

going out in the garden pulling weeds is therapy for me, takes my mind off things.

The raised beds, I just pick weeds as I water. Never really got overrun.

The bigger gardens, I plant them far enough apart that I can run the tiller in-between.

Aaaaannnnnddddd......preen helps with the other weeds.

I'm not completely sold on preen! don't those weeds reroot and grow again?? I've always been under the impression if you don't get the root, they grow back. But then running a tiller a few extra times isn't a big deal and it keeps the ground loose for the root system.

I wonder how much it would help you if you spent a few more hours a day doing this? I bet some members would give you some therapy at little or no charge.

First year in about 36 that we don't have a garden, in fact, yesterday I mowed the weeds down that are growing there.
Funny thing is the warden and I don't seem to miss all the weeding a darn bit. I will have to raid someone's garden when I need tomatoes.....

Bummer Art. Those were some purty mean maters you used to raise. Funny how not missing the labor part of it works. I keep threatening to tear up a hunk of pasture close to the house but I think I can forget about that anytime soon. I sprayed the pasture with Milestone for thistles a few weeks back. Any broadleaf fruit or vegetable probably wouldn't grow in there for a year even if I did. Killed the thistles tho!  :happy1: If I get some decent maters yer certainly welcome to them.

Between the wet spring and her mom dying and my mom being in the hospital more than not we were overwhelmed and just never got it done. We will get back into it but not on the scale we were at before. I know we will miss some of the fresh produce but there is always friends and the farmer's market.

Man I am enjoying the lettuce garden I made.  3' x 7' of lettuce.  Mixed 3 kinds together and just sprinkled it on the dirt and raked in lightly.  I go out every other night with scissors and cut lettuce and rinse it off.  At first it was the size of spinach but now it is getting a lot bigger and growing back from where I have already cut.  Our celery is getting big too and we cut some of that for each nights salad too.  No cukes big enough yet I don't think but will check them better today.  No red tomatoes yet neither.

Just picked 3 small cukes.  Gonna have a great salad tonight.  We have so much lettuce that this morning we made smoothies.  Put a wad of lettuce, with a bit of water and blend till no chunks.  Then add 1/2 banana and a jag of frozen raspberries cuz that is what we had and blended up in our Ninja.  Tasted great.  May add yogurt next time.  I really liked it.

when I see those flowers I pluck them.

Depends on when you planted them. I usually pull mine after they start laying down and you notice the green start drying up. I also quit watering them a good 3 weeks ago.

Some of our gardening efforts in the small garden plot. Hummingbirds & sphinx moths should be happy with the cannas & 4 o'clocks coming online.

As you know I have mentioned how great our lettuce garden is doing.  Now we are having green smoothies in the mornings to utilize our lettuce.  Now the cukes are coming around and will be added.  The apples are going to be added tomorrow too.  SO this is the second one of these caterpillars I have found in the last few days.  What is it?  It is ok to freeze lettuce to use in smoothies.  I may have to harvest it all so these bugs don't get it.

Dotch,
Those tiger lilies are really going nuts.  Cannas are a little weak.  Late planting? ;)

Cannas were planted later than I'd like, May 26th into cold, wet soil conditions. Corn mudded in that same timeframe around here looks like crap. Solar radiation and GDU accumulation into mid-month in June were lousy. Areas of that bed are partially shaded until about noon. The cannas also have to get their heads above the peonies planted directly to their south that really had a jump on them this year. The peonies just keep getting bigger every year. The canna emergence in that bed was erratic, this time. The other bed is out in the open in full sun. After doing battle with the weeds as well as the volunteer morning glories, they're more uniform.

I guess you can freeze lettuce for a smoothie.  You want to put it in the blender frozen though.  I wondered if that was an army worm.  I remember back in the early 2000's how bad they were.  Falling out of trees on us all summer.  Hope they aren't coming back.

Yes, the tubers need to be dug up and stored inside over winter.  Good thing is they are prolific as I usually dig about half of them and then plant about 2/3 of the ones I dug.  I give away the rest of them.  Reinhard, if you aren't too far from Big Lake, I can save you some.

Ya, it's always a sad deal when the cukes and maters are done. No cukes this year but the maters are just starting to produce here. The string beans probably have one more picking yet. The flower gardens have been very pretty. The bees, butterflies and hummingbirds have had a heyday this summer & early fall. The morning glories I'd written off earlier due to flea beetles and leaf disease sprang to life in late summer. They made their way up the electric pole just as they have for many moons.

Possibly although they just come back from seed each year now. it's been many moons since I planted any there. Every few years tho I get a bug up my @ss & buy a packet to mix in some different colors. You can see the resulting magenta colored blossoms scattered among the blue ones. The hummingbirds have hit the morning glories harder this year than I recall in the past. They've got it made here. Cannas, morning glories, four o'clocks, coleus, salvia, impatiens, petunias, feeders, etc. Haven't seen any orioles today so they likely will have exclusive access to that nectar feeder now too.

Went to check on the garden and found about 25 pounds of ripe tomatoes. Also, funny thing, the cukes that looked
dead and done several weeks ago got a second wind.  New vines and lots of blossoms.  Don't think I ever saw
that before.

Our old neighbor used to have a huge garden when they lived here.  I think he used to pick the tomatoes when they were still green.  Then they had no bad spots on them that happens later on.  I think he just put them in the garage on paper in the cardboard flats and kept them cool.  I am tempted to pick all of mine that are so nice and big and see what happens.  Before birds, bugs, etc get them.  Anyone else do this?

I've heard putting 'em in brown paper bags is a good way to get them to ripen. Anybody else ever try this?

yea I remember reb saying he did that towards the end of the year. I pick mine as they are getting ripe....but not completely ripe. set them in a cardboard box in the garage until ripe, then the frig so they done over ripen. some say they lose flavor in the but I claim  :bs:!!!!!!!

I used to blanch them to get the peelings off and then mush them into freezer bags.  Great for soups stews etc.  Now I just put the red tomatoes in a gallon freezer bag and freeze them.  When they start to thaw out in the bag the peels come right off.  Then I throw them in the pot of soup or stew and let them continue the thaw as they cook.  Much easier and works great.  I have done the paper bag thing too Gunner.  I have too many tomatoes to do that now.

I haven't done it for years but just prior to hard killing freeze, I would pull the plants and hang them up side down in the garage.  This extended the ripening time and many of the green ones would ripen.  I suspect this is the similar to putting them in a box in the garage.  My wife just cuts them up a bit and puts them in containers to be frozen.

I usually have extra tomatoes, so I wash them and cut out the stem and bad spots. I'll then carefully run them thru a good processor, but not until there mush. I spray a cake pan with Pam, piur the crushed tomatoes in it. Freeze them then busy them up into smaller chunks, put in plastic bags and back in the freezer. Use them in sketti and different hotdishes and chili.

Can't keep up with deadeye's tonnage but can't complain about the quality either. Decided ahead of the forecast monsoon to pick the ripest stuff and leave the rest for the time being. Most of what's left are the green Celebrity's, grape's and yellow pears.

Also, while keeping an eye on the hummingbirds I've been taking note of the "pollinators". I grow weary of those who keep harping about the demise of the bees, butterflies, etc. I call  :bs: Tonite while I was looking for a hummingbird I could hear but not see while picking tomatoes around dusk, a white lined sphinx moth was after the last of this season's four o'clocks. Monarchs have been all over the place thanks to all the milkweed they have access to. Painted lady butterfly caterpillars feasted on soybeans all summer long and the resulting butterflies were in numbers I've never witnessed before. Also, check out the bumblebees that have been after the coleus flowers at the ranch. These are the tip of the iceberg. What irritates me is that we've been growing all this stuff for decades without any intention of attracting pollinators and they show up regardless. We don't need a pat on the back, a warm fuzzy or to get all touchy-feely about it. It's what we do. Now they want to pay people with our tax $$$ to do what we've been doing all along? What a crock!!!! End of rant...

Rain quit for a while so I went to the garden and this is what I found.  Another big pile of tomatoes
plus a bonus of sweet and green peppers.  I guess my garden fence paid off keeping the deer out.
