Ya Sure, You Betcha

---------------------------
In December 2014, United Automobile Workers vice president General Holiefield accidentally fired the gun he was cleaning on his kitchen table, hitting his wife, Monica Morgan, in the abdomen. If you think that’s bad, wait until you hear about the gut-shot the couple allegedly dealt to Holiefield’s union members.

An indictment unsealed last week claims the labor chief, who died of cancer in 2015, secretly teamed up with his bargaining-table opponent at Fiat Chrysler, Alphons Iacobelli. The feds say they and other conspirators skimmed millions from the UAW National Training Center, a tax-exempt, Fiat Chrysler-funded entity that was supposed to help union automotive workers get job training.

The indictment claims Mr. Iacobelli availed himself of National Training Center money, buying limited edition gold Montblanc pens and a $350,000 Ferrari. He also allegedly installed a swimming pool, outdoor kitchen and spa at his Michigan home, renovations that cost $375,000, and paid off a relative’s student loans.

The indictment says the training center also spent $425,000 at a swag company owned by Holiefield’s wife, Ms. Morgan, while an additional $70,000 was funneled from the fund to the union boss’s nonprofit to his wife’s photography business. More training center cash paid for Ms. Morgan’s first-class plane tickets, her $12,400 four-night stay at the luxe Beverly Hills Hotel, and the $262,000 mortgage on the townhouse she and Holiefield owned, the indictment says. Happy wife, happy life, we guess.

That’s in addition to the $924,000 Holiefield received in legal union compensation between 2009 and 2014, purportedly for representing the interests of UAW members. He and Mr. Iacobelli were responsible for negotiating contracts between Fiat Chrysler and the union over pay, bonuses and working conditions.

Detroit’s FBI chief said last week that the indictment “calls into question the integrity of contracts negotiated during the course of this criminal conspiracy,” which the feds say ran for six and a half years. Jerome Durden, a Fiat Chrysler accountant who allegedly cooked the books, put it more bluntly, according to the indictment: This corrupt spending was intended to keep Holiefield and other senior UAW officials “fat, dumb and happy,” he said.

Mr. Iacobelli and Ms. Morgan have pleaded not guilty, while Mr. Durden will be arraigned Friday.

“The UAW has zero tolerance for corruption or wrongdoing of this kind at any level,” union President Dennis Williams said of the scandal, adding that it is cooperating with investigators. Yet the UAW has quite the rap sheet. Since 2001 at least 47 of its members, including officials at several locals, have pleaded guilty to corruption and embezzlement charges.

There are also eyebrow-raising expenditures that are legal. For instance, the union, which has nearly a billion in total assets, owns a lakeside retreat and golf course in Michigan, valued at more than $34 million last year, which includes an indoor pool, two basketball courts, a sauna, beaches and hiking trails. The luxury property was “designed for the upper echelon of the UAW,” one retiree told these pages in 2009. Six-figure salaries are the norm for top brass. And the union’s last financial disclosure includes expenditures at Sea World Orlando, as well as several casinos, bowling alleys and golf courses.

The union’s high-paid officials are no doubt cringing over the timing of the indictment’s release. Employees at Nissan ’s Mississippi plant are voting this week on whether to join the UAW. Those automotive workers would do well to ask if this is the kind of outfit they want to hand a chunk of their wages to.

Morning.  Nice day here too.  Got a little shot of rain during the night.  Didn't amount to anything but still nice to have.  Smelled smoky at our house last night.  Canada's fires I suppose. Seeing lots of deer on my way to work.  More that I have seen for a few years.  Lot's of twins this year.  Maybe the wolves won't get them.  Doesn't take long once a pack or two move in.  Well have a great day.

Evening all!! Not a bad day for a Monday  ( for me). Picked another big batch of cukes, maters and my serranos are turning red. Don't know how I let it happen but after 2 decades of not playing softball the boys talked me into it. I'm gonna be a sore pig from hell next week.

Supposed to rain here today.  Sure hope so.  My peppers are looking good so  are the maters.  Not red yet though.  Picked our first cuke the other day.  We peel cut in chunks and put in zip locks in the frig and put in our lunches.  Love em.

Morning all. Nice to wake up, and see that the little zipperhead didn't nuke us last nite.  62* and sunny. Busy day ahead. Grocery day in a bit, then up to MAYO to pick up the new Kaepernoscopy test, the Kaeperplast. Ya poop on a stick and send it in to check DNA cells. Wonder if the stick has his pic on it? Hmmmm...I'm may be on to something here..
Then off to ceme to water plants, have a chat with staff about upcoming position, and then have to put together agenda for tonites council meeting downtown. Gotta squeeze in some grilled chicky bewteen that stuff tonite. Have a good day, guys.

Morning.  Rebs I see on CCO this morning there is a protest in your town over the sending of services to Albert Lea and Austin.  We got 1/2" of rain yesterday.  Needed it.  Not much going on here.  Vikes game tonight.  Looking forward to that.  Driving semi today so will be able to listen to KFAN and get the Vikes news.  Makes the day go faster.  Have a good one all.

Morning boys, 60 & wet here. It was comin down pretty good a little after 4 so I went back to bed, there looks to be ~ .6" in the gauge. We went in to GR yday as we needed some groceries. Every where we stopped it seemed to be busy, which is how it works on a cool/rainy day up here. They're sayin 50% chance of more this am & highs 70-75, wind has already went WNW ,so we'll see. Sister & BIL are leavin Saturday & that means we'll have to pull their boat & winterize it tomorow. Not much important goin on for me here today, probably try to get out :fishing: somtime. Hope you have a great day.

Morning guy's!  I see the deer regulations are out for 2017.  Our zone's up north of Duluth have changed.  What used to be 180 is now 132 and we are lottery again this year.  Part of a thing to save or increase the moose population.  Went and got my license so I can get into the lottery.  Have to buy the licence before Sept. 8 in order to qualify for the lottery.  Deer season is something I look forward to every year.  Gonna make some chili today [low carb way]  should be good stuff.  Outside work for me today because yesterday's rain got in the way.  Lot's of rain for sure.  good luck.

Always some kinda protest here, Barry. MAYO took over the Albert Lea Hospital a few years back, as they are grabbing and taking over everything, and now they pulled out and are shutting it down to move services to Austin. Leaves Albert Lea without care. Did the same thing in Lake City, too.  MAYO has bought up everything in this town and raised taxes on properties beyond belief. They are no longer about medical care, just owning everything as far as the eye can see.

We're off to deer camp tomorrow afternoon. Going to pressure wash the building Saturday and Sunday if needed, then the brother's paint sprayer is going to get a workout on Monday. Going to try to squeeze in some fishing and maybe a little of practice with the 7mm.08 and .40 glock. Have a great weekend and have fun at camplooza too.
