Wine right now. The ones in sour cream will come later. I alternate. Best herring in wine sauce: Fareway's bulk from the deli. I've had every brand out there, with Olson's and Elf  brand being my favorite. Not anymore.... :happy1:

Not sure, HD...so much is rebranded. Elf is now Vito, Olson's is something else..... :doah: Years ago there was a little old country store in one of the little towns down here in SE Minnysoda, that people used to flock to, to get herring out of a barrel. That's what I like about it down her, the little quaint towns like Lanesboro, Harmony, Preston, Fountain, etc. Lots of great little eating places. And trout fishing under the bluffs.  ;)

Years ago, I would make a trek to Chatfield to turkey hunt in the spring, then later, trout fish in the rivers. ....aahhh....those were the days.....

I just do the miracle whip, three parts, one part mustard, touch of creamy horseradish, vinegar, salt, shake of onion and garlic powder. Sprinkle with dill weed and smoked paprika when done....

Whoops, this is for the smomed deviled eggs... ;)

I like it but I'm not a herring specialist.  However my father in law says he is.  I took him to the local bar in forest city and they have their own recipe that is only pasted down with owning the bar.  Now he makes special 40 mile one way trips to pick it up.

Someday I'll havta  do burgers or brats in the morning to see if it has the same feel..
