Good line Hawg...   Well just checked the weather for my hunting area and it just keeps on going up.  Now 65 during the day and 46 for low Sat night and 50 for low Sun night.  Unreal.  Two years ago I went all of the way down to Luverne to hunt with an ol' buddy and it got down to 10 and stayed there day and night for the whole hunt.  The lakes froze over solid.  What a difference.  Yup if I get one I am hauling it right to the local butcher and having him bone it out for me and freeze it.  Then I will bring it home and deal with it later.  I am getting excited now.  The wife gets done at 11 and I will have subs to eat with us.  I also have 2 extras for us to eat in the blind tomorrow.  Can listen to the Gopher game quietly  on the Iphone in the blind.  That is what is so cool about a ground blind.  I guess no long underwear this year.  I am scrambling looking for orange that is not insulated for this years hunt.  Well another cup of java and back to packing up more stuff.  Can't ever have enough stuff along can ya???  Good luck to all and have fun....

Your thoughts are certainly plausible, but I wonder if there is actual evidence.   3 or 4 points isn't much evidence of superior genetics, more like average or so it seems to me.

Sounds much more like an effort to limit the kill and maintain the population.  Does Pennsylvania have a lot of hunters for the number of deer?

And for the 'after thanksgiving' idea,  could be pretty cold sitting on a stand up north in December.

In Pittsburgh the average high in december is 41 and low is 25.   In Hibbing it is 20 and 2.

That's true del but most of the areas in the mountains don't have much farm land around so it's just acorns and grass. Very rarely do you see big bucks in the woods around here where there are no farms around. If you hunt around farmland then yes the deer are bigger and thicker, bodies and racks. Around my house where hunting is not permitted and they eat everyone's plants and gardens they are all nice deer. So you do have to factor in food supply/sources but a lot of people do feel genetics has a big factor in the deers health and size
if you kick me when I'm down you better pray I don't get up.

'mornin'! Another beuatimous day. Was sure a dandy yesterday. Soil sampling on some stuff where I saw some nice roosters. Also a bunch of Huns I kept kicking up when they'd move from one unharvested patch of soybeans to the next in the wet spots. Just nice to see them. Icing on the cake to a gorgeous day. Good forecast for the weekend too. Still some mosquitoes pestering us. Shouldn't need to wear my Carrhartts with the white hanky in the back pocket.   :deer:

We had 46 just a few minutes ago, on the way to upper 60's like yesterday but more wind. The highest temp I seen yesterday was 67 here. Afew boats out mid-day most looked to be hunters. Hope everyone out in the woods is having some luck :deer: & coming home safely. Enjoy the day guys

73* here yday! My house, anyway! Wow! pretty sure that broke the record of *71. Have to look for "actual" temp. Had the ol' charcoal weber smoking up some butterfly pig chops basted with teriyaki glaze. Mid 60's today; 45* and sunny right now. I'll take it...have a good weekend, guys.

Yup, broke the record from 1893 of 70*. Official temp here was 71* yday.  To help the deer hunters out, I fired up both S*** blowers and let 'em run a few in the driveway. Boober said I'm not supposed to use the "S" word.   ;D

Friend from church just gave me some stuff from his garden....  Arugula, parsley, and rosemary.  Then the guy across the street came over and gave me a pheasant breast.  He just got back from SD.

Time for sous vide pheasant next week.     With arugula salad.

Nice haul del. Pheasant pot pie in the oven as we speak with red lobster biscuits.  Not sure what you guys are seeing but we've had a huge push of mice at the cabin, stacking them up big time.  Talked to several farmers lately that been saying the same thing, is this a sign of a nasty winter?

Guy across the street works is hardly fancy.  Just likes to hunt birds.  Has a couple of German shorthairs that he and his partner Kim dote on.   The guy that gave me the veggies is from fancy part of town but grew up a good old boy in North Carolina but turned out to have a talent for surgery....   Ran the last mash unit in Nam.   Likes to fly fish for trout.  Sits next to us in church.

OK, pictures it is.  I'll need to figure out a sauce or gravy or something.   Hopefully, it won't be dry.

Been running the trap line and the hawk blocks and haven't had much sign of mice.   Been pretty warm so not necessarily an indicator.   A squirrel or two at the feeders, but I'm not talking about that.

41* and dark out.....buddy in New York has 27* right now. Soup. I think I'll have soup for dinner.  Already thinking of food. froze a bunch of that 'tato sausage soup the other week, just took out a tub. Supposed to be cool out today, and I'll be in the yard getting rid of leaves as long as the legs and back hold out. Just can't afford to have someone rake it anymore. I'll take the red rocket around in circles until most of the maple leaves (all from the neighbor's trees) are ground up, but my crab apple is raining down leaves like a dog with mange. I'll take my sucker/blower/grind 'em up thingie to that pile. At least they're in a circle around it and not scattered all over the yard. My huge old lilacs haven't even started to drop yet; something tells me they're gonna have to wait until Spring to get raked up.  Thinkin' it might turn nasty real fast one of these days. I'm ready. Anyone that isn't by now, with the great weather we've had, really needs a kick in the arse to wake 'em up. I'll bet a ham 'n cheddar omelet should hit the spot in a bit...and there's a couple made-fresh plain donuts here, too, my favorite.  Have a good Monday, guys.... :coffee:

Morning all! I took the week off my normal job to process deer and deer hunt. I was so sore last night, I slept in. Still having a hard time moving now. Drink some coffee, have a little breakfast, drop some Advil, and back at it. We will be cutting meat all day to catch up.

Have a great day boys!

Morning boys.  Well no deer here yet.  We have 38 in the morning on Sat and then up to 72.  Went from freezing our buts off to sweating them off.  I had a nice 8 pt buck at 85 yards all I could see was his neck and head.  Almost went for the neck shot.  Now that is all I picture.  Darn.  Oh well.  Then lots of does as close as 25 feet from the blind, looking right at us trying to figure out what we were.  Could have shot them too. But so darn hot I didn't want to deal with it.  Plenty of time yet.  I will wait and see what happens here on the home front.  Hopefully someone pushes a buck into our area.  I have the day off so going to relax some and also get some projects done.  Going to have some pork sausage made by the people that butchered the neighbors hogs with 2 sunny side up eggs and toast.  After another cup of java that is.  I am not even going to talk about the Vikes.  I am bummed.
