Well it's been a full week with my little terrorist. :sleazy: :rotflmao: been some pretty good progress with going up and down stairs, even going outside to do his duty.

The old sheltie and Him don't get along yet but there has been some progress. I knew this was going to be an issue. The age difference is huge.

Now if I could get him to quit chewing on everything in site. :rotflmao:

back from the vet with the little terrorist!!!!!! :rotflmao: he got another round of deworming.......and another one on the 29th i can do at home. vet said everything looks good. he weighed in at 24 lbs which she said was right on schedule. he laso got a dtp shot??? i think thats what it is.  got another appt in a month.

as far as the city........the vet said he is to young for the rabies shot and thats all the city is concerned with. only thing they suggested was with the dog food. they didnt seem to care i was feeding the diamond puppy food, they suggested that i feed him the diamond puppy large breed. its apparently going to be better for him long term with his bones etc, so i'll get some tomorrow. the country store in town here has it......FF can pack sand!!!!! :happy1:

Well you may call him shadow here but we all know its "NO" at home can't fool us glenn. My 8 year old retiever 's nick name is still "NO" little soft in my old age but he wears his shock collar just incase he forgets who the boss is and when he gets selective hearing and memory. ;)

When vets suggest adult food for pups usually a concern he might be growning to fast, further ease him in to the new food, mix it 50/50 first couple days a,let his system adjust, dry food only, best for teeth and gums plus he won't get the shetes, get him plenty of chew, raw hide chews as he'll be teething for a few months, keep away from pigs ears during summer months because they will grow samonila.just a few thoughts after 50 years of rasing/training retievers,oh you'll need to learn how to trim his nails  soon.so might as well pickup a trimmer, right now a regular nail clipper will work if they start growing and become white tipped, just be mind full of the nerve.
Title: Re: Introducing Shadow!
Post by: glenn57 on January 01/19/21, 01:10:31 PM
Snow the vet said he is right about where he should be weight wise. She did say it was ok to mix the food with the plain puppy food. There reasoning for the large breed puppy food was a long term goal that if would serve him better as he gets older. It was alot if information to absorb but I believe in it was mostly for better bone development.

We already have a hounddog nail clipper with the last 4 dogs we had and they did clip his nails when I was there. And he had more than enough chew toys. But it's like a little kid, buy it a $200.00 toy , they'd rather play with the box it came in. :rotflmao: same with the little terrorist, he'd rather chew on my fingers, shoes, coat and do on   :rotflmao:

Oh and as far as the NO....  :rotflmao: ya hit that on on the heady. :rotflmao:

When I paid for my stuff the young gal seen my hayslips hat, said nice hat, she said her grandparents own a place up there. To find out it's just down from the jessie lake church and township hall. She was pretty hot to LPS. :rotflmao:

No. Bark collars don't have remotes, my does. I have to initiate the process. It's not really a shock collar.

Looking good Glenn.  Looks happy too.  Cooper has a few dings on his snout from trying to push Buddy too far.  Cooper is 41.2 lbs today.  So what kind of dog food did you get this time Glenn?  We had already bought the second bag of Diamond Puppy so are going to at least finish that.  May just keep with it.

May just keep with it.

i had bought another bag of the diamond puppy food, then he had his vet visit. the vet looked on line and said diamond makes a puppy for for large dogs. she suggested getting that for better bone etc growth down the road. so i bought a bag of that and mixed the 2 together. we have another vet appt on the 17th of feb, i'm going to ask how long i should feed the puppy food. diamond makes a sporting dog food and a bunch of others. i want to find out what would be best. when he's done growing.

Is it Diamond Naturals for large breed puppies?  Kind of pink at the bottom of the bag?  Man they use the word Natural and it is automatically $10 more a bag.

Poor guy,all my male pup's over 50 years worth I couldn't/wouldn't have em clipped, figured they would hate me forever (I would run away) plus they were amusing humping my ole lady when they felt frisky before she passed on.

I always went with male pup's as 80% of my bird hunting was geese, mostly big honkers,I wanted a big retriever,as some of the rochester giants were in the low teens for weight,up in alaska the greater pacific strains were up to 24lbs.had a buddy/partner we leased land for hunting in rochester mn,he had a little lab pup maybe 30lbs,that little shete could retrieve those big geese no problem, sometimes dragging em bachwards to our pit blind but the little rascal got it done.

most dog guru's claim female bird dogs have a better nose for scent, not sure if this is true? none the less my boyz never let me down, infact today with my poor hearing my current pup let's me know "incoming" way before I have a clue, love it,makes my day whether or not I drop a bird doesn't matter, just watching my pup work/excitement makes it worth while.

my current pup at 8 years old still gets fired up when we have a hunting show on the tv,lol after the shot he see's the bird drop then tries to fetch it sniffs around behind the tv.commical

well a $111.00 later, that was a quick trip to the vet.

shadow weighs 35 lbs. got his distemper and rabies shot. off to go get him licensed with the city later. he also got a pill for both heartworm and fleas and ticks.

our sheltie, Star, got her rabies shot. she is 13 years old, and according to the chart i looked at based on her weight and age she is 74 human years old. wonder if i could get social security for her. :rotflmao: :rotflmao: she weighed in at 27 lbs.....last time in she was 33 lbs. doc said she was in pretty good shape, no heart murmors for a dog with few teeth.

i asked about food choices for shadow. he recommended feeding him the large breed puppy until he's 9 months to a year old but i could go to the adult food after 9 months. so ia asked about the diamond types........he suggested feeding the maintence diamond brand after the puppy food.

Title: Re: Introducing Shadow!

Wow glenn the youngster is growing fast...

hope all works out with your sheltie after the rabies vacine.had a lengthy talk years back with the senior small animal vet at the U of M when my 12 year old golden came down with lymphoma,at the time they were doing a study on labs and goldens because so many senior pets had this disease, maybe no worries with smaller pup's like your sheltie but they're conclusion was our vacines and how hard some are on internal organs,(liver/kidney) he told me unless you have an aggresive dog no rabies after 10 years old, another issue for our pup's was the K-9 lyme vacine was another toughy two year application and only works  5% of the time but also takes a toll on internal organs

Take notice of your sheltie to check if she has a reaction to the rabies shot,if so her kidney's will become inflamed at her old age ,tell tale sign is two bumps on her back behind her rib cage.

vet continued to school me about our vet clinic's,he said they send a notice for what we need to have done, next thing they do is piggy back 3,4 ,5 other vacines,so young pup's and seniors be careful, rabies vacine is good for 3 years but some cities want booster every year or two years, vet's are protected if pup bites somone and owner is a couple months behind on shots,so bottom line when rabies are due insist on just that one shot if pup needs parvo etc come back at a later date, just a fyi,my last two pups had cancer once they went over 10 years so a little gun shy.

How ya doing with OB training? get him a training collar yet?

the shot was distemper. And I posted it above my Walz comment  :rotflmao:

Snow, in town I need to keep up with the rabies shots per there ordinances. I believe the sheltie was 3 years apart
As far as the other things I got pills, for shadow anyway. The never pushed anything for the sheltie.

Working on the OB, slowly. Once it warms up I will get outside and away from the sheltie so he concentrate better. He still gets my paper every morning and brings it to me. He also goes and gets the toys I throw down the hall and brings it back to me. He isn't liking giving them up much yet. :rotflmao:

Humans get a vaccine and it lasts for life.  The ones dogs get should also last that long.  It is a money pit the Vets have going for them now.  Get the book:  How to afford Vet care without mortgaging the kids.  Every dog owner will appreciate the book.  Dr. Busby in Bemidji wrote it years ago.  Some of it is funny.  How to tell if your dog needs to see a Vet type of stuff.

Glenn our pups or at least Cooper has already had the initial shot and the booster for Distemper and have had the 5 way Coronovirus, Parvo, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus.  She gave me a folder with the info.  We still worm him once a month with the stuff she used.  Pyrantel.  I am getting a rabies shot and a lymes shot for Cooper next Wed.

I'm thinking that is what the dttp or whatever you called it is.  SO you are covered it sounds like and that book is great?  Other Vets don't like him because of what he says in it.  We look things up in it all of the time.  He gives a lot of advice on how to treat your dog without going to the Vet when possible.

Mine is paperback.  I stop and buy my Bravecta from him in Bemidji when we are passing through.  I got my books straight from him.  Friends and relatives asked me to get them for them. He is pretty much retired and spends winters in Texas now.  I had our last lab neutered there.  Dropped him off and went shopping.  He had told me we could pick him up in 2 or 3 hours.  That is why we went there plus he was half the price of everyone we checked in the area.  The other Vets wanted to keep the dog overnight.  Like he says.  Noone is in those Vet Clinics at night so your dog is much better off with you at home.  You will notice if something is wrong and can bring him back.  They just want to charge you more money for boarding overnight.  Makes sense to me.

right now the obedience thing is simply walking with him with a leash so he stays to my side, when i stop he sits. we are also working on him to sit and stay, i walk a little ways away have him come to me then sit. he is doing well.  :happy1:

i'm not looking for a grand champion..just a well behaved hunting dog...........looking good so far!!!!!!!!!

LOL  I was on the river an hour ago getting more of my blocking that is frozen in.  Get a few every day.  Fun to do it.  Well Cooper finally started following Buddy and I when on the sled going down to the river.  As I was chopping ice I look up and don't see dogs.  First I scan the yards in Canada and glad they aren't there.  I call them and look around and here comes Cooper running as fast as he can from our shore.  Buddy took longer.  I was so happy to see him coming first and really loved him up too.  Then Buddy shows up and I smell skunk, the dreaded thing!   I smelled them both but there were ok.  I think they were messing with one but got lucky.  WHEWW!

About 20 years ago we arrived at our cabin with a full cargo of groceries, cats, dogs, and other supplies. It was about 10:00 at night, dark, and I let my dog, Cooper, out of his crate and proceeded to bring the cooler, groceries, and other stuff in the house. Cooper dashed off toward the woods and began to bark. The first trip or two from the car to the house I called him and he ignored me.  All of a sudden I noticed the smell and thought “oh crap”.  He ran to the edge of the lake where there were cattails and rubbed his face in the cattails and water. He turned around and headed right back to the woods and got sprayed again. He hit the cattails again and headed right back for another confrontation with Mr Skunk.  I finally got him into his crate and he spent the night in it out in the yard. The next morning, I opened the front door and was greeted by a thump-thump-thump of his tail against the side of the crate. He had three baths with peroxide and Dawn dish soap that day, and there was still leftover aroma. Through it all, he was just a happy dog. It was funny as hell to see him run back and forth between the lake and his new found friend, the skunk.

ah yes spring = critters coming out from a long cold winter, nothin worse than the yellow juice on the face of our inquizitive K9's,best neutralizer I came across over the years my vet carries it"skunk off" this after shampoo didn't work, tomato juice ,vinegar etc all the home remedies I could think of,skunk off works on contact, comes in a concentrate like shampoo and also a spray bottle incase handler get his/her clothes infected by a sharing pup,I carry the spray in my pup's travel bag on hunting trips for him and me along with his emergency gear like cat gut incase he needs a quick stich job from barb wire.

22 will work, as long as you can shoot in town. Feed him on the deck and shoot while he's eating.  It shouldn't bother him. But a cap gun is like 4 bucks at any Walgreens or whatever.

So Glenn.  Your dogs brother swallowed a sock today.  One of those ankle high ones of the wife.  He walked in the office with it and I called him.  He usually comes and hands me things.  Well he looked at me and swallowed it.  How can you swallow and dry sock?  Well I hope he poops it out.  He swallowed 3 of those hair Scrunchies once and we found one of them in his poop in the yard.  Maybe I should feed him some bread with a lot of olive oil on it for lube?

been down that road. and it was my own damn fault! :banghead: :banghead: training-087 when my chocolate lab was a wee little pup i had him along bear baiting and i was going to site in my 30-06. pup was in the back of my truck, used the truck tailgate for a bench for the sledbed. after a couple shots it hit me, the perucssion in the back of the truck must of been horrible.  :angry2: :angry2:

took alot of work but i got him out of it. got to the point she'd see me grab a gun she went crazy!!!! :happy1:

my last few gun dogs, pot's pan's,pellet gun,22 crack is to much at first, then they would tag along to the gun range ,I would park my truck way away from the guyz shooting first few times to the range, the shots are muffeled sitting inside the truck for them, later in training way away from the trap range, toss his retrieving dummy, his focus was on the dummy not shots fired,as a young pup tagging along wilst field hunting, hept the boy in the truck but near the action/shots fired, never had a issue breaking them in slow.fols with young pups would go right up to the firing line scaring the shete out of the youngster, pup would be terrified, shaking, tail between the legs, sooo very wrong.

My duce on his first hunt kindof as he sat in the truck until we were done, today my hearing is shot so he lets me know when the geese are coming, eye contact.grown up later in life

I have never had an issue with gun sounds with a pup but don't just shoot where it will hurt their ears just like it would hurt ours.  You can also get those loads from the hardware store that are .22 loads with no bb's for shooting nails into concrete.  I have a pistol that I can shoot them in and it shoots dummies for training.  Different colors are different power levels.

Does he look at you and do a little whine thing Glenn?  Cooper does that and it is hard to resist.  It means he wants on my lap or outside etc.  We know exactly what he is "talking" about when he does it.  LOL

Sorry, has nuttin to do with your pooches but came home last Thursday before trying to rush otta town for the opener only to find the the Golden retrievers eye almost swollen shut. Called the vet and quickly brought him in. Turns out he got stung on the eyelid , after a a couple of benadryl injections and doses of benadryl he was fine. The dog is full of hair, but not on the eyelid..

Figured I'd be a decent guy and apologize and explain what was going on. Told here I try and get it back to her by 9 am or so. What a crabby old bat. :angry2: :doah: she made the comment I'm not to happy about it and didn't know where it went, and she wanted it earlier.  :doofus:

I'm going to start throwing it in her bushes, old bat instead of putting it on her railing right out her front door.

you boyz with your young terrorist pup's notice the shedding lately? good grief its every day at my place piles and piles of hair, found a couple hot spots on the boy wilst probing for ticks, hotspots are common with goldens, ran out of my ointment I usually have on hand "panolog" great cure all for hot spots and ear infection's my local vet won't give me a replacement tube unless we come in,two week wait in two weeks my boy would be a walking infection.any home remedies here?

Hot spots vary from animal to animal depending on skin sensitivity and allergies with your pup it is a bacteria skin infection common with golden retievers because of the're thick fur unlike a lab which hold's moisture, usually comes from lake algae on my pups unless I spray them down with clean city water/shampoo when we get home from the lake,if your pup's get it started by licking/scratching it turns red/raw,usually results in massive hair loss if infection is not treated and spreads quickly,if the spots get really bad pups will need antibiotics anti inflammatory meds in severe cases.,I had one case years ago with my boy before I knew what a hot spot was,he lost a softball size patch of hair off the side of his face, bloody raw,bad stuff, dogs with senitive skin will get this during summer months on they're legs inbetween they're toes any place they can lick, scratch and chew so be mindful on these hot summer days.

Further be mindful of your pup's ear's for infection again goldens thick fur around they're head area doesn't allow adequate ventilation to the ear canal causing ear issues/infection left untreated pup could lose hearing, telltale ear infection starts with extreme redness inside the ear channel, usually a brown smelly discharge as well, your vet will explain better if your pup get's either infection,on long hunting trips(days long) Ihave a k9  emergecy first aid kit just incase, including sutures and cat gut just incase my boy gets cut up in barb wire and various meds just in case.

scary with long hot summer weather is blue/green algae on small farm ponds/cattle stock ponds, pup's ingesting this poison can die in 30 minutes, not sure if they have a treatment today but several years ago wilst pheasant hunting in sodak, hot summer and fall weather the town of webster sodak claimed over 100 bird dogs parished opening weekend that year from blue/green algae as they (dogs)would cool down in stagnet water out in the field lapping it up.

Just tried to order another bag of Diamond Maintenance on Amazon and can't get any Diamond foods now.  Says deliver in one or two months.  Amazon has their own brand that has the same ingredients and is quite a bit cheaper.  Compares to Blue Diamond food it says.  I just ordered 3 30 lb bags since it is Amazon Prime days.  Saved $14 a bag.  Normally $37 for a 30 lb bag.  Now $23 a bag.  Will have to blend that in now.

After 50 years raising pure breed goldens we learn a few things, thick fur pup's can have issue's that are not hereditary,we buy into a proven bloodline for field ability and hope for the best,I could pick-up a rescue pup and not have one health issue but will the rescue pup have built in natural instincts to hunt? maybe, maybe not? time spent training  a maybe pup isn't worth my time unless just a house dog, then it doesn't matter,I spend 5 months/year in the field chasing everything with feathers,as our pup's age we deal with issues as they arise just like us older folks, our pup's are family and treated as such, the good days and bad days.My boy has given me 8 great years(soon to be 9 next month)

No 50 years here but the whipper snapper took a swing and got one without an itch or or other issues plus can swim! The downside I was told from day 1 I couldn't hunt him , but still worked him on wings until I got busted, the dog has some serious drive but kinda nice coming home and only cleaning one dog vs. 2. Not sure I have tge patience on brushing out burs , seeds and whatever out of these thick haired creatures..

Nice lookin pup bobber...looks like he was a big help in that pic or trying to be.

In my old age when we hunt most often I'm solo, watching my boy work or just sitting in our blind makes the hunt for me not to mention my hearing is shot so my boy let's me know of incoming geese way before I get  clue,"team work" iffin I scratch out a couple birds great if not,not a big deal just enjoy the moment with him.

Lol,yeah kong's are great, when my boy was young and teething like your's I had 3 kong's  that we would stuff a milk bone in  em when I got home from work every day, then hide then around the house, under pillows, couch crack etc then let the boy hunt them up,but he never destroyed one kong just stuffed toy's.Now they have stuffless toy's my boy just loves.

so..shadow will be 10 months old towards the end of july here. been working with him on retrieving and obedience. he is getting pretty good at the retrieve, his obedience thing is so-so. i use a leash and treats, he does really good walking beside me and not pulling on the leash. he is good with the sit and stay in front of him, but not so good when i walk a distanced away and want him to sit and stay.

kinda think  he might be a bit young yet, OR i may need t o be more consistent in doing it, like every day???????  at this point i think he is a little bit gun shy with the bang, but seems to be improving.

when we where up at the cabin over the 4th, down the lake someone shot off a pretty big and loud fireworks and he took off like a scalded cat!!! :doah: but he didnt go hide, it took a few minutes but he came back all wound up.

the next night we where ready so at dusk we had him in the cabin, and when the fireworks started again he got really  nervous!!!!

any thoughts????????????//

Glenn, poor shadow....big bad meany noises....whether you like to order stuff online or not this really works, google innovet.com pet food site, consider CBD oil treats like the soft calming chew's they work wonders on my boy siezures(less severe) work best for loud noise anxiety like thunder and fireworks....doesn't make them drousey either.

started my last two boyz out early in the field and gun range, kept them in the vehicle wilst shooting about 10' away from the action hidden in a treeline window's up to mufflle the shots for the first 6 months.then start the second stage around gunfire at a distance.it's easy to make a pup gun shy but hard to correct so get it right now, baby steps.

My current boy on his first hunt,he stayed in my truck during the hunt just 10' away from the action with windows rolled up.,great way to start a young bird dog.

Just go out and shoot a .22 around him for awhile.  Then a shotgun from a distance.  OR have your brother shoot a shotgun from a distance whilst you have him on a leash.  Then work closer.  Give him some treats to keep him happy whilst doing it.

That sucks you can't find a cap gun Glenn.  Well if ya can't order one then just do  the. 22 at the cabin next time your up. Do it while he's eating or playing fetch. I wouldn't hesitate at his age,  if the 22 has no affect while fetching let the shot gun go, not over his head but the other way while fetching.  Meanwhile at home get some loud garage noise going, blowers, air compressors even a nail gun could work..

Post by: snow1 on July 07/09/21, 07:18:36 AM
Careful guyz young bird dogs experiencing this big loud world we live in one needs to move very slowly introducing our pup's to shooting, after 50+ years of training bird dog's have yet to have a gun shy pup or one that trebles in fear from thunder or fireworks but help other's with gun shyness, introducing pup's to loud noises is and should be a slow process,a good start introducing pup's to loud noises can start inside the home by banging a couple of pot's around the pup while he is eating.... cap gun is a great tool for plan #2 while pup is making a retrive,a second person helping is a plus throwing pup's retrieving dummy from a distance shooting the cap gun as you release the pup to retrieve.

Every year at our gun range I see new gun dog owner's bring they're young pup right up to the trap firing line ignorant to the pup's body language(trembling, tail between the leg's) these pup's are scared sheteless,in the old days this was the procedure or shooting a 12ga over the pup's head while friend holds on to pup's leash so he won't bolt,50/50 chance one will ruin said pup doing this for life.

so take it easy glenn, make training your pup enjoyable and just like young children our young pup's have a short attention span whether OB training or retrieving short training segements say 5 to 10 minutes tops otherwise you'll get frustrated/pissed at the pup but its not the pup's fault, repetition is key one command at a time per week,it'll pay off in the long run.

Have fun with it,you have a lifetime best friend that will give you great memories and unconditional love.

I believe it's what you put into a pup during the early stages, I'm not saying you aren't Glenn but the more the easier training is. I don't want to bore you with the past but my first black ( it was just him and I no kids or wife) he got nothing but training,  everyday.  He was used to a 12 ga. at 5 months,  kicking up wild pheasants during walks here in town in an area at 6 months.  Had him to 3 different game farms before his first season of wild birds at 8 and 9 months.  At 10 months a week was spent in Sodak and he was shockingly catching wild birds and raising eyebrows.  But, I could see the last 4 labs lack the training since we all have other obligations everyday,  like I said back then it was just him and I,  and working is what we did, at it showed.

so i've made an executive decision with shadows dog food. i'm switching him over to the purina brand dog food.

he has the worse dog farts i've ever encountered. and when i pick up what he left behind its just as bad. :doah: :censored: it could peel paint off the wall. along with more then half of it its runny. i've fed purina to all my previous dogs and have never had this before. maybe an occasional runny one but not like shadow.

gotta try something..........

Glenn, if you insist on Purina, get the PURINA Pro plan, not the dog chow. My Vet said the Pro plan was pretty good food. When we adopted our Golden the previous owner was feeding him dog chow, we had to drive him home with all the windows down.

I've fed my previous dogs the regular dog chow and didn't have issues??? Hmmm. I Know each dog is different though. Even with the regular purina dog chow all his turds where solid.

My brothers dog had some special expensive dog food he needs to feed his because of some issues.

Just a thought—one of my dogs was having that issue, and at my vet’s suggestion, I added Purina FortiFlora. It’s a probiotic that comes in a small carton containing a bunch of small packets of powder that you tear open and add to their food. After six or seven doses the problem was corrected. I still give them a packet every once in a while. You can buy it online and if I remember right, it comes out to about a dollar a packet.
The primary dry food I use is Diamond Natural Lamb and Rice, but I like to rotate some other foods in regularly, and I usually add a couple tablespoons of decent quality canned food, and about a quarter cup of water. Sometimes instead of the canned food  I’ll add a couple tablespoons of cottage cheese (maybe you can find a use for that after all) or a couple tablespoons of canned pumpkin.
I do know that different dogs react differently from each other. I’ve had some pretty long evenings in front of the TV with my dogs at my feet emitting toxic fumes after eating some of the more expensive foods.

We're on pro plan here as well.  After the "grain free" foods were noted as bad that's when we switched to it. So far so good, some flavors the pooches eat better than others ( chicken and beef are the favs) . Thought of trying mixing wet n dry like FW mentioned but I figured I could never go back to dry only once they gotta taste. Ya know come to think of it I haven't noticed them dropping bombs since we got off the grain free...hmmm.

lastly....him eating his and the shelties poop drives me friggin crazy.  :doah: :puke: so i did some serious googlin.....they had suggestions of a list of things you put in there food that is supposed to stop that, some things right off the top of my head that i can remember is meat tenderizer, crushed pineapple??????? thought easy enough i tried the tenderizer......... naw that didnt work!!!!! so at this point i'm hoping as he gets older he grows out of it!!! :surrender:

Cooper does it now and then too Glenn.  Not all of the time.  I scold him when he does it.  Must be enough food smell in it or something.  I've wondered if some kinds of food may contribute to it?

oh he is definetly on my sh!t list today!!!!!! so we'll start out by this'

in the morning i have kinda a routine. i go downstairs and play on the laptop......mainly stir the pot on websites . he usually comes down, today my wife went with a friend shopping so no upstairs supervision. :surrender: :doah: i go up he isnt laying in the kitchen or living room. go check the bedroom........and if he is in there it usually isnt a good thing!!!!!! there he is on our bed and has literally shredded out cover to the butter container. :angry2: kennel time for that.

then i go out and refresh a hummingbird feeder....in that time he licked clean what was left in the butter container.  these where pushed back on the cupboard up against the wall mind you. we had a long talk!!!!!

so i decide to take the screen door up to the hardware store in Richmond to get fixed...........i get home and 2 hats i had laying out to pack for the cabin are in the living room he was chewing on.  :censored: AND.........the coffee guy sent my soffee..he packed the box with paper towels. since i'm a cheap azz i set them up on the cupboard to use, needless to say he got them down and shredded them!!!!!! :surrender: :bs: :censored: :doah: so then i bring a cooler downstairs for tomorrow to load and find  the top to my thermos bottle laying down there!!!!!!  :censored: :banghead: :banghead: so yep......more kennel time.  :censored: :censored:

so right now if somebody said they would take him off my hands and i'd give them a $100.00 they'd have a new dog that goes by the name BOAR JR!!!!!!! :mad1: :mad1:

Oh Gawd I didn't need to see that.  Sorry but glad to hear that Glenn.  Here I thought your dog was a sweety.  Man Cooper can piss me off too.  I think that is because they are smart and thinking all of the time.  What can I do now thing.  When Cooper was a pup I gave him a crumpled up piece of typing paper when I wanted to keep him busy.  He still likes that and it is no big deal to pick up the pieces.  I may throw him more than one.  Now he knows my wastebasket is his free to get paper out of and chew it up.  May not be a good thing for some but works for me.  Keeps him busy.  Now he walks up to me and gives it to me and I say "thank you", then I give it back.  As far as screen doors I really miss ours.   :rotflmao: :rotflmao:   Gave up fixing it years ago.  I used to put a piece of duct tape up a foot or two.  I put one inside and outside right on each other.  Then they could see the door.  BUT didn't work perfect.  I'm thinking of fixing it again now.  LOL

He's looking good Glenn.  Cooper has been devouring the rawhide things so I switched and got a couple of those shin bones.  They are about $6.  They are hard so make a lot of noise when he drops them but last forever.  And yes he is a bonehead at times too.  Still love him though!!!
Title: Re: Introducing Shadow!

i gave him a rawhide one day went we went fishing, it was gone 3 1/2 hours later when we got back. i really have stayed away from giving my dogs bones of any sort after having to spend $300.00 to get my chocolate lab roto routered. :surrender: the rawhides are 2.45 at the local coop store.

snow.......my dog hasnt quit chewing on things since day 1!!!!!!!! it dont matter, at home or the cabin he's ALWAYS chewing on some kind of tree branch, bark, whatever.  :rotflmao: !!!!!!!!! we had some small 4 inch wood cut up ready to split......he was trying to carry them around.......when he couldnt pick them up just right, he'd paw at it on the ground, growl and bark at it. sometimes i think he got dropped on his head when he was born!!!!!! :bonk: :bonk: :rotflmao:

one day at the cabin, some ducks landed by thj dock. shadow watched them pretty close, just sitting by the cabin. i managed to keep him from going down to the lake for a while, then it got the best of him.  long story short he ended going into the lake and of cousre in his exit out he went through the mucky swamp......again!!!!!!! :doah: so, down i go, grab a stick to throw in the lake to clean him off. he is on the dock, i throw the stick in the water..........and he jumps off the dock to retrieve it.......first time he did that.......

LOL the "life and times" of shadow, gee he really is filling out, looking good.My boy at 9 yrs old likes to chew his "Kong" treat holder toy's even when they're empty,it's a good thing as these hard rubber toy's are indistructable and cleans his teeth and gum's.

When my boy is bored and I'm not paying attention to him by throwing his chuck-it whilst smoking a cigar out back,my boy will wander off to the woods and find a fallen tree branch to knaw on,alway's finds one big enough to make a mess in the yard he has me trained to clean up before I  mow...

At our campfire area Cooper ends up having as big of wood pile as we do.  He keeps going into the woods getting new sticks/logs.  He once had 2 blood spots on his cheek area.  Looked like a snake bite.  Happened more than once and couldn't figure it out.  Finally he drags this log up to the house and was so heavy that it turned his head as he dragged it.  There were some little broken branches on it that were cutting into him.  He got it though!

Sorry Charlie.  Human vaccines don't last for life either....

Double sorry Delmar. Measles and smallpox shots are a lifetime vaccine.

BOSTON (Reuters) - The smallpox vaccine protects for a lifetime, and so does
the vaccine of measles or mumps, according to the first long-term study of immunity to childhood diseases.

Actually even the flu vaccines last a lifetime too.  Each year they are different to fit the new strains.

this is getting really frustrating with shadow. he is generally a good dog, but i cant keep him in the yard.   he dont go far but i turn around for a second he is off venturing.  :angry2: he is already in his kennel on a time out...........yesterday it was 3 times.  :doah: i put the shock collar on him and he either wants to go into the house  or lays on the deck. i live in town....just cant let this happen.

i HATE leashes.........it dont help when all the neighbors say hi shadow, morning shadow......oh he's just saying hi......... and pet him.:surrender: :doah: instead of kicking his ass and chasing him home. he's so friendly and would rather lick you to death then growl at someone.

up north he is pretty free to run and never goes far........i dont get it.

any ideas!!!!!!!! i've kicked him in the ass.......yelled at him..........

Hey now glenn, the right training collar used and a little training for both trainer and trainee...

Most often I see folks having growning issues as you discribed here, most often folks herd or read a "shock collar" is your huckle berry whether if it's for wandering off, digging, barking etc....true a training collar is an effective tool used right, purchasing a low cost collar can be an issue,a good collar these days will have both sound and vibration stimulation and is usually all that is needed in most cases as well as the zap in different levels of stimlulation,my guess glenn your collar only has the zap, which is fine as long as it doesn't over amp making your pup squeal when applied, but I'm only guessing.

Two choices since you live in town.  Either have him on a leash so he is in your constant control or get a perimeter underground fence installed.  They work great.  Have had them before.  My brother used to install them.  Actually 3 choices.  You could install a chain link fence.  Underground is cheaper.

 :pouty: so this morning I left shadow at home, and didn't put him in his kennel when I went to deliver the horseradish.

When I got home I noticed some wrappers on the floor. Well. I had started to get stuff ready for up north. I go into the spare bedroom where I kinda congregate stuff. I had an opened pack and a full pack of crackers in a box.

Yep  :doah: you got it, he ate the whole thing. :banghead: :banghead: :rotflmao: guess that'll learn me to shut the door. I haven't come across anything that dog won't eat. :pouty: :rotflmao:

It's all fun and games isn't it Glenn.  I put Cooper either in the inside or outside kennel if I am gone for awhile.  He is fine overnight though.  Although now he likes to grab our kitchen hand towels from our towel holder.  I put one of those big steel clip things on it and seems to work.  But he is so much fun and feels so good when he hands me things.

Cool stuff Glenn!! I usually have an hour after dinner to lay around and it's lap here also, but usually it's the lab on me and the golden retriever on him..  :surrender: both need to be on me.

It's funny how we change over the years. Our first lab wasn't aloud in the house( the wife's doing), he had a nice garage run but still.. Fast forward a few dogs and they don't even ride under a topper anymore ,in the cab. Curled up in bed ,couch , sitting table  side and getting as many treats as fleet farm can stock. Spoil em while we have em I say!

Bobber, I can one up you on this one. My last set of Goldens each had a dog bed facing opposite direction in my extended cab truck, so they each had a window. My wife actually elevated the bench seat, so they could lay there and look straight out the window. We always had treats in the truck, and they always got a Sunday (no chocolate)at the Dairy Queen in Motley
Yea, they were spoiled, and I miss them. Anytime we drove by a truck with dog in the bed, my wife would give them the old stink eye.

I hear ya boober. My first lab stayed outside in a kennel. He had an insulated dog house with blankets, and it the winter I tarped it.

UNTIL.... we got the first sheltie. He came in permanently too. Why did one have to stay outside and he was a gentle as can be dog.

Shadow rode in the back for the most part at first, not much anymore. :pouty: mam they sure can train us  :rotflmao:

Oh heck yes.  The last couple of days he has been a little wilder than normal.  He is coming in better now.  When him and Buddy want to go out we just open the door and let them out.  Buddy comes right back in but Cooper needed more time.  Now he is coming back almost as good as Buddy.  I am not holding my breath though.

yea every night after he's fed shadow gets all cranked up and irritates the hell out of the sheltie........she goes behind out chairs!!!!! :rotflmao:

does cooper lick alot?????? man shadow is always licking !!!!!!! :doah: :embarrassed:
Title: Re: Introducing Shadow!

Ya he does quite a bit.  We got some stuff that actually works so he doesn't lick too much.  When he is outside we don't know exactly what he has been chewing on so first thing once he comes in is we give him a few ice cubes.  He loves them and also helps as a treat for coming in.  At least it rinses his mouth some.  That frig with the ice dispenser is the best thing we could have as a dog treat machine.

Cooper is getting darker hair on his ears and his back.  Getting a little longer too.  I wondered if Shadow was too or not.  Yesterday I forgot to look at the bird feeder on the deck and let the dogs out.  Sure enough a squirrel was there and he jumped into the snow and burrowed in it cuz Cooper had caught up with him.  Cooper stood there and kept smelling in the snow and reached down into it and got the squirrel and killed it.  Then he brought it to me as I was on the deck by then.  Darn.  We may be out of squirrels now.

Yea we talked about that last week. He is getting darker on his nose, around his eyes and along his back. We don't have much for squirrels here in town but he likes to chase the chipmunks and squirrels at the cabin. Never caught one yet but I try and shut him down when I see he is on the prowl.

I'm not going to quit trying. Problem is my step dad's boat is a 14 fter with 4 seats and I only use it on the cabin lake most of the time. Not much room for him in there. When I use my boat it's usually going to a different lake, and if he doesn't go in he ends up in the truck till I'm done fishing, and I'm not doing it when it's this hot out

Copper doesn't like it when I leave him home neither.  When I walk out the door he expects to be going out with me.  So like yesterday the wife tells me to go out and get the truck ready and she gives the dogs a treat and then she comes out.  LOL  Sure love him too.  I guess you are bringing Shadow to deer camp since your honey isn't home?

yea i'm going to have to.  i thought of leaving him with the grandaughter, where the wife is but they have a little lab to and its just going to be to much!!! The little 15 year old sheltie will be staying there, she's pretty easy to care for. the saturday and sunday when we are out in the woods all day he'll go in the big shed with all the doors closed........i dont quite trust him being in the cabin for that long by himself yet.  after that and everyone leaves i'll hunt mornings and evenings so he'll be supervised a bit.

i got the ides that my brother will be also bringing his dog also given the current situation he's at with his woman...... :doah:

Get him one of those about 6" long shin bones with peanut butter inside it.  They last forever and our dogs love them.  We have about 4 of them laying around here.  They even like to pick them up and just carry them around.  Much safer than those rawhides which I use for years.  Will never use them again.  Bad for the dogs to swallow them.

I mentioned it before but it's crazy how we change over the years. Our first yellow wasn't allowed in the house until it was -10 or colder ( he had swing door into the garage) which was fully insulated.  Never was allowed in the cabin and always slept and traveled under the topper. Fast forward a few dogs, they ride in the cab, have a couch spot and share our pillows.. Gotta love em!

Oh no Glenn.  Mine were the same way with all of the chain sawing I do.  Buddy is finally calm with it so Cooper is getting better too.  But they only go 25 yards and lay down.  Damn I would be there in a heartbeat if I could be.  Oh man....   Talk to as many neighbors as you can as he may end up on their step during the night.  I would knock on every door.   OR just keep on walking through the neighbor hood calling him.  My prayers are with you my friend.  My wife too is thinking good thoughts.  You keep us posted!!!  Put a big bowl of his favorite food out too so if he shows up in the middle of the night he has something to eat.  Throw one of your coats out there too.

Hope you find him, Glenn. I had a dog disappear for about a week, that finally found his way home. It’s a crappy feeling when one of mine disappear even for 10 minutes. We’ve got the Invisible Fence, but that doesn’t keep coyotes or other threats out. Good luck, man.

so, Sue has a home health care nurse come in once a week now to draw blood, and clean up her picc line area, also to check inventory of her supplies she needs to reorder them.

she was a bit hesitant last week with shadow out to greet her as big as he is, but she has a dog also. when she came today of course shadow had to go greet her. she went in the house to do her thing and i stayed outside out of the way.  came in after she left and Sue told me the nurse said she really likes shadow and if we dicideto get rid of him, she would take him no problem.

so me and the Dawg had a talk..........told him he best shape up or he's outta here!!!!!!!!! :rotflmao: yea he looked really concerned!!!!!! :rotflmao: :pouty:

Hope it’s not the case, but I’ve had a couple dogs with Lymes, Erlichea, and Anaplasmosis. This in spite of being vaccinated for Lymes. Anyway, I kept a bottle of doxycycline on hand and started giving it to them as soon as they showed signs of pain in the joints, usually limping. The doxycycline works quickly, and it’s pretty cheap, but you will have to get it from a vet. Good luck, Glenn.

Happy Birthday Shadow and Cooper.  Cooper is about 80.  Will weigh him today.  We celebrated with him yesterday too.  We had one heck of a scare this morning that I never want to go through again.  The wife tethered Jake and put the two of them out to pee.  She yelled at me that Jake couldn't stand up.  I ran like hell in my undies and he was shaking and his legs were weak so I helped him up and into the house.  I just kept hugging him and he came out of it.  He seems fine now.  He ate and drank water so far so good.  Man was I worried.  He licked a little of that poison for the buckthorn but not much.  I wonder if that caused it.  Will be much more careful in the future.  Cooper is doing just great.  Such a nice dog.  He doesn't get up on the counter anymore neither.  Love them both.
